Can unisphere manage CX4 Storage Array running FLARE 29 ?
Hi,
We are going to upgrade our existing CX3 Storage Array to a CX4. We believe that it will be running FLARE 30 and will be managed by Unisphere.
However, we also have another CX4 Storage Array (In our remote site) runs FLARE 29.
We would like to know can we manage both CX4 Storage Arrays with Unisphere OR we have to use separate tools (i.e. Navisphere Manager for FLARE 29 and Unisphere for FLARE 30).
Your advice is sought.

Tony, unisphere can manage arrays back to R19.
Use a global domain and you should be able to see your pre R30 arrays.
But there are restrictions on what can be done, due to flare constraints...
ie. fast is not available on R26 and below and thin pools are not available on non CX4 arrays.

Like Jim said it can be done but why don't you upgrade the remote box to Release 30

Maybe somebody has to do promote to production where non-prod arrays get upgraded first, novel concept.

Don't forget that you can use the off-array Management Serve on a Windows workstation to try it out - you don't have to add it into the Domain to see how it looks.

The Off-Array Management Server is now called EMC Unisphere Server (Windows) 1.0.0.1.0473

We purchase those CX Storage Array from DELL. They say that we cannot make any upgrade unless it is done by DELL System Engineers & they charge a lot for firmware upgrade.

Dell's pulling your leg. I have Dell/EMC arrays and have always done my own FLARE upgrades and support has never been an issue. The only plus to having Dell do the update is that they have access to disk firmware as well as the utility partition update. Both of which are not available to customers.

Just out of curiosity, does "Disk Firmware" = Firmware applied to FC Disk ?

Disk firmware is the hard disk firmware - both EMC and Dell have access to this. If it is needed, there is a process to update the firmware on the disks.
In flare 30 there is a change in the way the update takes place. In older flare, it was a total update - all disks at one time - all hosts off-line during update. In R30, you can now run disk firmware updates on one disk at a time in a raid group while still on-line - check the new features for R30.
