I am planning to clone a LUN . Is it require database and application to be down during this cloning. Anybody have high level steps how to do clone a LUN.

On the Clariion you can do whatever you want regardless of what's going on on that LUN. However: when you create the PIT copy (point in time), you need to consider the state of the data on each LUN. When the PIT copy is an open database, you can compare the state of that database to the one on a crashed server. So if you can stop the database (or some other command to make sure the database is consistent) the copy is a copy you can actually use.

Tammy,

RRR is correct about the crash-consistency. What DB/application will you be using? Have you looked into possibly using Replication Manager (RM) as a way of achieving application-consistent clones...?

Speaking of RM: I'd like to get my hands on a copy of that so I can train myself using this product. Does EMC have NFR copies of products they sell ?
I'm a partner by the way....

I already did that this morning, but I was curious if others tried this as well.

The truth to be told I don¿t know but I would imagine that they do¿ I work for an ASN partner too¿ Better contact your EMC account manager because if you don¿t ask you won¿t get ;-)

You have to bind a target lun of the same size (in blocks) and add the source and target to a clone group.

I suggest you take some EMC SAN training on Data Protection.

You can download RM from service partner web site in Licensed Software section.

1.Database must be stopped or use some EMC products(Networker, Replication Manager) to create consistent copies of db.
2.Depending on your version of SnapView see documentation there
Home > Support > Technical Documentation and Advisories > Software ~ S ~ Documentation > SnapView > Maintenance/Administration, if you have FLARE revision newer then 22 you can read only in Navisphere help menu.

Is it called "Licensed Software" ? I cannot find this section. I only see:
Home
Celerra
Clariion
Connectrix
EDL
Symmetrix
Software --> is this the one you mean ?
Tools & Forms

In all sections, I can'd find anything downloadable about RM except release notes.

I think you need to register a license key first and then you can download that particular sw and any patches etc etc... Therefore not really the same as being after a NFR...

That explains why I don't see the software. Thanks anyway. I hope my EMC contact will resolve this.

Tammy--not sure if you are still looking for this since the thread is a bit old. If you are working with Oracle, there is a pretty good Engineering White Paper that outlines the process for 10g. Obviously, there is a different process for hot vs. cold.

Oracle 10g with SnapView in SAN Environments.
