CX3-10 serial connection problem / reset to factory default

Hi,

Could you please advise on taking a serial connection to CX3-10 storage?

We are trying to reset password, which requires connecting via serial and establishing a PPP connection. If we connect with a cisco cable  to a laptop with serial connector (Win7) we get dial-up 777 error "remote computer not responding". If we use an additional cable to connect to a newer laptop by USB (both with Win7 and XP) we only get a bunch of weird signs on a console and connection is not established either.

Or maybe there is a way to reset password without a serial connection to the emc? We do not need any data from the storage, so restoring factory defaults is also an acceptable option - we'll reuse the old equipment with lost password in a new place anyway.

Best regards,

Gosia

Thank you Ankit, I have used this thread (among others) https://community.emc.com/thread/109402 but failed to connect until I found original EMC micro DB9 cable. There were no problems with the connection when the original EMC cable was in use, was impossible to connect properly with any other cable. Thank you for the hint anyway.

Best regards,

I had problems using Windows 7 with the original cable and I now manage to connect using a Windows XP Virtual Machine running on VMware Workstation which runs in my Windows 7.

If you don't have the login credential and wants to reset it, you need to set up PPP session as per my understanding. For PPP session here, you should be requiring DB9  to micro DB9 cable connectivity.

If you have atleast the SP management IP, you can try putting default username/password combination.

Hi,

Actually this is a workaround and a struck of luck that I found someone who had an orginal cable, which seemed to be lost in transport. To mark the question fully answered I would have to know if there is a possibility of returning to factory defaults without the original cable.

Regarding the OS I used a laptop with Win7 and had no problems whatsoever, but my colleague who has another (newer by the way) laptop with Win7 has constant problems with establishing serial, not only to EMC storages. I had no time to track where this difference comes from unfortunately.

Hi,

I guess I was hoping for a "stick you hair pin into this tiny slot on the back and it will return to factory defaults like an old calculator"-solution

If it's not possible to clear the old configuration without the original cable/old passwords then this is an answer to the original question.

As per my understanding it can be done in either of the two ways

1.  Complete re-image of the SPs, which requires Serial cable.

2. Clearing the existing configuration once logged in to GUI, which requires IP and credential.

I am not sure if something can be done via service LAN port and hope somebody will comment on it.

There is no reset button on the array!

In order to do a factory restore you would need to re-image the SP over PPP Connection.

A secondary [dedicated] Ethernet Interface on both CX3 / CX4 Family Arrays that provided TCP/IP connectivity to the SP.

Only a single SP is available, via each Service LAN interface. (w/o a switch)

Service LAN Port is utilized to make a connection and perform managerial tasks. For Eg. Your Navisphere is not opening, you forgot your username/password etc.

You will be able to log in to the Setup page via Serive LAN Port and go to setup page to destroy Domain Security and User information but It will not RESTORE the array to factory default!

Other option, if the data is critical Certified erasure is always preferred

Not really, if you need certified erasure you need to get in touch with EMC.  If array is functional you get use naviseccli to erase individual drives (it’s still not considered DOD certified). What are your plans for this array ..if it’s going into a dumpster it’s cheaper to shred the drives than pay for secure erasure.

I would like to console into our EMC Clariion CX3-10c and do a security erase on all of the drives.  Can I accomplish this by consoling into the unit. Is it possible?

The serial port does not require a username/password - it's secure because access to the serial port requires access to the array. The serial port can not be reset - it's a RAS connection into the operating system on the SP. When the serial port is connected, internally, the port is using IP address 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.1.1, which is why when using iSCSI on the array you can not use that IP address.
