CX500 serial connection
Like some others here, I'm having difficulty connecting to a CX500 system via serial port. I purchased this system used so I have no idea what any of the IP addresses or passwords are. I've read the documentation for initializing the system and I'm certain that my laptop and serial cable are fine. I have a second CX500 which we purchased new several years ago, and I'm able to establish a PPP connection fine on that system using the same laptop, cable and dongle. The used system seems to come up just fine, at least I don't see any amber lights. I've restarted the system several times with no success.
Is there some way to hard reset this system to factory defaults without wiping the OS? Is it possible for the console ports to have been shut off?

I figured this out myself but thought I should post the resolution to possibly assist others. I removed the cables connecting the DAE trays to the Storage Processors. I was then able to connect via serial cable to the console port. I'm not sure whey the connection wouldn't work with the storage attached but it wouldn't.
Once connected, I launched the browser, connected to 192.168.1.1/setup, reset the IP addresses and deleted the domain information. This is all explained in the Initialization Guide (P/N 300-001-272). I was then able to reconnect the storage and begin configuring the system through Navisphere from a browser connected through the LAN port.

I'm having the same issue. Is there anything special about the pinout for the rj45? I have used both putty & hyperterminal with the same results. I used a cisco terminal cable for my connection.

gsrb18, I attempted your suggestion of removing the DAE and was not able to get this to work. The “modem” dials and reveals a 777 error, referring to problems on the remote host. All attempts using various cables have been unsuccessful.
· Cisco Console Cable
· Modified Cisco Console Cable to match pinout (Glen's picture)
· Null Modem with straight patch cable
· Null Modem with crossover patch cable
Currently running various IP scans to attempt connectivity. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Exactly as prescribed by EMC CLARiiON CX300, CX500, and CX700 Initialization Guide.
Data bits 8
Parity bits None
Stop bits 1
Baud rate 115200 baud

How do you have the PC setup to connect to the CX500? Baud rate, parity, etc?

Open a new terminal window (Hyperterm) using 9600, none, 1, then reboot the sp - you should see the SP BIOS starup - this is the first step to ensuring that the SP"s are at least starting up.

Thanks for your help, Glen. Using Cisco console cable, rebooted SPA - saw 3 still characters for about 30 seconds. Then saw random characters continuously flying by. Never saw any legible text.

sounds like either parity or speed mismatch

Finally figured this out. Long story short - get the right cable. Don't use a Cisco console cable and expect this to work. Thanks for your help Glen!

I have hard time to find out pinout for PPP connection to CX500 serial console port.
First of all there must be two cables connect together to achieve successfull PPP connection. (P/N 038-003-448 RJ-45, DB9 male and P/N 038-003-458 DB9 female, DB9 female). Pinout for whole cable combination is:
RJ-45 DB-9 female
1 N.C.
2 4 (four)
6 4 (this is not error, four)
3 5
4 3
5 2
7 6,1
8 8
7 N.C.
9 N.C
Best regards,
Helmut

Cable #3 is a special cable used ONLY on the CX500 - it is a short cable that ships with each CX500. To this cable you connect a null modem cable (DB9/F to DB9/F straight through) to your desktop.
