CX700: Vault LUN not enabled or not valid

With your issue, I 'll prefer to open a Service Request with EMC CLARiiON Support team - they will be able to check the box and troubleshoot properly.

Just curious - was there any issue or hardware issue/replacement in recent past for which the Write cache got disabled? I suspect any Vault drive (one of the first 5 drives in the very first enclosure) was replaced. Anyway - best option is to engage EMC support.

thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately, the Box isn't under support anymore.

Yes, there was a vault disk failure recently. The CX700 was off for a while and after starting it again, 0/0/2 failed and got replaced by a spare.

That's what exactly I suspected as I mentioned earlier.

Do you find any error message on the Navisphere or on the SP Event Logs? I think - the vault drive replacement was not proper - and may be we are having issues with Vault load or CRU signature on that replaced disk.

However, this may be a critical issue and may require proper troubleshooting and support.

Since the array is out of maintenance, you may wait to hear from others in this forum with more help/suggestions.

In the meantime, you may consider exploring the option to engage EMC support in some means on a call basis or so. Your local EMC contacts may help.

More precisely, Disk 0/0/2 failed. We removed the failed disk and replaced it by another one. It rebuilt without problems and now all disks are green.

Thanks for your explanation. The logs have been cleared as all seemed to be ok, but maybe the event log had been saved.

As far as I have been told in the past, the Array needs to be recertified from EMC to be able to get EMC support, so engaging EMC support might not be an option, as recertification is beyond reach. We are volunteering for a non-profit project, so financial resources are very limited.

Might it help to replace the failed disk once more, or will the vault lun stay disabled anyway?

Somebody mentioned something about deleting some hidden LUN with the cli. Is that a correct pointer?

I am having a similar problem in a similar situation.

What was the solution and how might I resolve it?

Would clearing the logs do the trick?

On older arrays (older FLARE) sometimes the write cache won't enable even when everything is healthy and all criteria for it to be enabled are met, it required "resetting" the affected cache value.

Won't hurt trying since it is disabled anyways so see if the following might work?

1) Note the original value of your write cache

2) Set the affected cache value to 0 (hit Apply)

3) Then "reset" it back to the original value

Then try again to enable it.  If it doesn't work, and I just wasted your time then we'll just wait for someone to respond with what fixed it for the original poster.

My CX300 is rather slow without write cache.

There's a KB which explains all cause of write cache being disabled for Clariion systems. You may want to refer that. search for it..

One important point to note is as I have gone through it a long back. It says that if there are small a couple errors which could be ignored really (but a combination of all of them makes the array's cache disabled).

One thing you always need to take care of, is never replace a part of the system when it is offline. Chances are the newly replaced part may be faulted by the system, once it is in On condition.

Thank you for the fast response. Unfortunatly I cannot find a working solution for my situation.

First I've checked my system and as the result it told me that the write cache is disabled. As I try to enable it I got this message:

"Enable write cache - Write Cache is not enabled due to any of these reasons:

1. There is no Standby Power Supply (SPS) present.

2. A Storage Processor (SP) is faulted.

3. There are multiple fan faults present.

4. A power supply is missing or faulted.

5. There is at least 1 faulted Link Controller Card (LCC) in the system.

6. One or more LUNs are offline."

But all of these points are OK in my system.

I've checked the event logs on both SPs and found this:

"Write Cache Enable Pending.  Vault LUN not enabled or not valid."

So I tried first to set the value for the write cache to zero, apply it and then back to 472 MB. This do not fix my problem.

Then I've rebuilt all storage groups and LUNs including the hot spare ones. I still got the same error as I try to enable write cache.

I found a trick to reset the fault in the registry of the SPs, but I don't know how to gain access to the registry of the SPs.

its: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/Flaredrv/Parameters/FlareVaultDelete = 1

Do anybody know what else I can try to get the write cache enabled?
