DAE Install on New Bus

Do the SP's require a reboot when installing the 1st DAE on a new BUS?

No. Not at all.

DAE installation / removal doesn't need an SP reboot - Usually if there's a problem, restarting the management server solves it.

That's interesting because when we were upgrading our CX3 to CX4, we installed a new DAE on one of the new BUSes.  This was the first enclosure for that BUS.  If I recall, it required a reboot. I wasn't sure if that was the process for installing the 1st DAE or because the system was not seeing the correct BUS speed.

It sounds like you will need to reboot for your CX4 to see that new DAE on that bus.   If you have another set of the SFP to HSSDC cables, i would plug the SFP end into the last bus that doesnt have any DAE's in it so you dont have to doit later.

Was it because your CE didn't install the enabler for the additional 4 enclosures?  That would be why you needed a reboot probably.

The CX3-80 to CX4-960 conversion doesn't come default with the 8 bus enabler on it.  It comes out of the box with 4 and needs an enabler and reboot to enable the other 4.

so should i expect a reboot of my SP's when i install the 1st DAE on BUS 3 this weekend? how do i check to see if a new BUS is persisted or not?

I think the CX3-80 to CX4-480 also needs an enabler for the additonal buses.  I'm not 100% on that - one of the EMC guys will probably answer that.  I've had upgrades that took long and the CE is about to fall over from lack of sleep and almost forgets to install the enabler.

You should be able to reset the bus while the box is online, expecially if the only DAE on that bus has no data on it.  Even if things didn't work properly, you could install a DAE, see that it didn't add it, or added it at the wrong bus speed, then remove it if you had issues.

Adding/removing disks online is what this thing is meant to do.  If you can't do that, then it wouldn't make much sense to invest all the money in a fault-tolerant storage system.

actually,  i have had several installs in which if you add a DAE as the first one on a BUS, it sometimes requires a reboot.  I think it comes down to the port is not persisted yet.

What i do is if i am on a install in which all the backend buses are not used at the beginning, i plug in the sfp cable end in to the port during install and reboot.  it seems to correct that issue allows for hot adding DAE's in the future

It is just like adding more I/O modules to a CX4 where you need the reboot to persist the ports even if they wont be used.

This is from my personal experience.

You are correct ... What might have happen was the CX3-40 only had 2 backend busses .. Then when it was converted to a CX4-480 there was 2 new busses that were not persisted .. So if they go to use a new bus it will have to be presisted with a reboot.

i'm not sure, but we went from cx3-40 to cx4-480.
