Disk Failure

Question

Hi all,

when Disk fails in a Calriion, How do we see that which host is been effected? how many lungs are effected, which Raid Group? which hot spare is active, how much percentage is been replicated?...

finding via Navisphere takes lot of time.. by going into properties and all..and the other part its Navisphere runs slow in our environment.

So can we do this all via navicli also.. Can some one give an Idea about this.?

The System Fault Summary is not going to give you any more information than what is displayed when you right click on the array and select 'Faults'. If you do not have email alerting on the array you really should set it up, as you will receive more detailed and immediate alerts when there is a problem with the array.

If you do not have the taskbar on the left side of Navisphere than either you have an old version of FLARE on the array or it was closed (go to View and select Taskbar).

You can do it via navilci but will have to know some data first

navicli -h IP_address getcrus will give a long list of hardware and can show the failure

navicli -h IP_address getdisk bus_enclosure_location will give drive data, when run against a hot spare will show what is spared and how far its been rebuilt

In nasisphere if you have a failure all you have to do is right click and choose show faults it gives you the location of the disk right there. I dont know that navicli commands will be faster than drilling down in navisphere.

thanks for reply,I do agree with gercrus, but with getdisk failed drive will be displayed in gercrus but hotspare info will not be displayed in gercurs for that we need to check in Navisphere, another thing.. due since JRE not updated most of the time navisphere doest open at all time.. so what I do to get all the information is will run a CAP report on it to get the details, but that takes lot of time...:(...

Have you tried right-click on array and select "Faults"?

When a disk fails you should be a "F" on the array, the Raid Group and the Storage Group. You should also get a alert message if dial home is enabled pointing to the disk that failed.

If you are running FLARE 24 or later (and you should be

) there are two Navisphere reports that will show you what you want: 'Available Storage' and 'RAID Groups'. Both of these are very well suited for putting into an Excel spreadsheet for better sorting and analysis.

The 'Available Storage' report will show a DAE view of the array with the list of disks in each enclosure, and the RAID type and RAID Group number that each disk belongs to. This will tell you to what RAID group a disk belongs.

The 'RAID Groups' report will list the RAID Groups and the LUNs bound to that RAID Group. This will tell you then the LUNs affected by a disk failure for a disk in a particular RAID Group.

I keep these two and a few other reports up to date in Excel for quick reference on each array's configuration.

Do you have a taskbar on the left side of Navisphere with Reporting as one of the tabs? The reports will be in xml format and will open in a separate browser window. You can copy and past all the text into excel and the column headers and data will map to cells perfectly. Just delete the top text and you have a column header for your data that you can use for filtering and sorting data.

getcrus. If any issues found will go via
Navisphere and check for red 'E' on any failed
devices. will run the sp collect and open an emc case
to verify the details...

another way is to:

AranH,Yes I do have that option, a wizard popped out and selected for system fault summary...Is this what we need to do to get the fault report... I was lucky that there was an option reporting on the left side of Navisphere. But in some environment we don't see the left side taskbar in this case what we need to do?

Do you have the arrays set up to email alerts - this is probably the quickest way to be alerted about faults on the array without needing to constantly check via CLI.

Also, the "E" means empty - when you have a DAE that is partially full, the first time you open Navisphere and browse into the Physical section for the DAE's any DAE that has empty slots will display the "E".

Thanks all Email Alert is enabled. I used to get the email alerts, I do not know who has set that.do we have any documents for setting email alerts.
