Expending my existing LUN's
I just installed my new 10TB into my CX4 and wonder if i can extend my existing LUN's just by adding more disk into existing RAID group, or i must create a new raid group with new lun and than extend existing lun into a metalun?

- create a concattenated metaLUN
- create a striped metaLUN
For best performance striping is better, but you need to consider that the components you need to use must be the same size as the original LUN and you should use LUN's on separate RG's for each component.
If you cannot create LUN's of equal size on separate RG's, consider creating a metaLUN on the same RG by making it a concattenated metaLUN.
OR
Suppose your to be expanded LUN is on a 5 disk RG and you need it to be on a 7 disk RG and the LUN needs to be larger as well, try migrating it to a new larger LUN on a new larger RG. This way you have LUN-enlargement on the fly. you still need to extend the partition from the operating system !

There may be an advantage to migrating whole LUNs into the new storage. This allows you to balance your storage storage system's load by moving a 'hot LUN' on a shared RAID group to its own RAID group (created from the new storage) with a lower utilization. Its capacity can be changed as well.
After migrating you can defrag the recently vacated RAID group to provide additional capacity for the LUNs remaining on the RAID group.
The section 'LUN Provisioning' in EMC CLARiiON Performance and Availability: Release 28.5 Firmware Update has a longer discussion of this, as well as of MetaLUNs.
