Lun Migration

I want to migrate my file share LUN Raid 5 SATA 2.2 TB to a Raid 5 Meta LUN 9.4TB when I migrate the LUN, will my windows host automatically see it, will all file structure\permissions\shares\disk qouta's\etc be preserved, and will this be transparent to my end users?

my windows host is Server 2003
Clarion storage is RAID 5 SATA

Clariion CX300 flare code 02.26.300.5.031

Any help or advice would be greately appreciated

The LUN migration feature, included in the Navisphere Manager software and the Navisphere CLI, lets you move the data in one LUN, thin LUN or metaLUN  to another LUN , thin LUN or metaLUN. You might do this to change the type of drive the data is stored on (for example, from more economical ATA to faster FC, or vice-versa), select a RAID type that better matches the data usage, and/or recreate a LUN with more disk space.

During a LUN migration, Manager copies the data from the source LUN to a destination LUN. After migration is complete, the destination LUN assumes the identity (World Wide Name and other IDs) of the source LUN, and the source LUN becomes private and is inaccessible to the host. This whole process is transparent to the host.

Using Manager, you can start migrations, display and modify migration properties, and display a summary of all current migrations on one storage system or all the systems in the domain. You can also cancel (stop) a migration, which deletes the destination copy and restores the storage system to its original state.

yes the drive is GPT, sorry forgot to include this information.

is that a W2003 , W2008 or just windows in general limit?  For some reason 4TB comes to mind for somethingbut i cant remember why

another thing to consider, just because you can go to such a large LUN ..should you ? If this is a LUN used for file serving have you thought about how long it will take to back it up/restore, chkdsk ..etc ?  Would it make sense to create another smaller LUN ?

256 terabytes max, saw it somewhere on technet a while back.

Since the original lun was GPT, you should be able to take advantage of the extra space once the migration is completed.  you will have to use diskpart and "extend" that drive to use it.   Disk managment will show your original space and the new space asn unallocated.

Cant remember if there is a windows drive size limitation?  9.4TB is pretty big.

Thank you very much for the information and the help, but it has prompted several other questions, since this LUN is in production what happens to any new data written to drive or does all IO need to be stopped? and do we have any idea how long it takes for this migration process to complete?

you don't need to stop I/O but preferably do it at the lowest load, take a look at this paper on the timing
