Navisphere Management Console

I guess my first question would be... do you have a specific need to manage the CLARiiON from outside the CLARiiON itself.

I know there are situations where it is required, but for most situations you can just run NaviSphere directly from the array (as long as you have the Management UI package loaded) and then you just need a supported browser (on ANY platform).

Did you mean the host which EMC uses to dial in?
If yes, then it has to be a windows host. There is a dialer application installed on this host which is a Windows binary.

you can take a *nix host and then run a virtual machine for Windows on it as a management console...but it has to be windows

I assumed he was talking about the Off Array Manager utility.

I've seen the Windows version (we use it in one situation) but I don't know if there are other versions for other OSes.

oh ya...off array...
that actually is a legacy of old FC series of clariion which carried ahead when CX came in. unfortuanately that also requires windows host though...i never saw a unix based installation for this.

Yes, it IS old, but in some situations (in our case security requirements at an external site) it is the only way to completely lock down management of a CLARiiON array.

Our Information Security Office doesn't trust just the web server and username password authentication on the array itself. We have to lock it down with the Windows logon security as well.

This is for the EMC dial-home where upon hardware failure on the CX, the application will dial out to EMC to inform that there's a hw failure.

So is there a Linux or Solaris OS that can support it.

unfortunately not , ConnectEMC (dialer software) and EMC Remote (remote control software, sort of like VNC) has to run on a windows box.

No. to summerize the comments made by all...You have to stick to windows

there is an option to enable only email-home notifications. this can be done even without any workstation, the agents on clariion SPs can be configured for that (they need to have a connection to a SMTP server of course). there are couple of drawbacks however:
1. EMC will not be able to dial in. this can slow down troubleshooting, diagnostics etc. AFAIK Webex can be used as workaround but EMC can't use it without some cooperation from your side (which might not be possible 24x7)
2. Navipshere Agent does not have any means to check if the SMTP server accepts the notification. so it is not that reliable solution compared to ConnectEMC.

Can you provide some instructions on how to setup this notification on the ARRAY? We do not allow the dial-home notifications here. We only use the email portion. One of our arrays has this setup with a management workstation. The other I would like to setup without the need for a workstation though.

I'm just curious why your security folks won't allow dial home. We have issues with dial in, but not with the dial out functionality.
