Using CX300 disks in CX4
Hi, all. I have one question regarding using old 73 GB disks.
We have CX4-480 with 7 300GB/15k/FC disks and old CX300 with 15 73GB/15k/ FC disks which we would like to used under CX4 for backups or so. How would it be possible to use those disks ? We tried to install them (same DAE) but the 73 GB disk ended in "requested bypass" state and CX4 never recognized it. I understand that CX4 should automatically downgrade its BE speed from 4 Gb to 2Gb. Is it any other possibility to use old disks ? Aprreciate your answers and opinions.

Make sure your Flare code is at least 4.28.000.5.003.
The supported part numbers are:
PN005048290
PN005048533
PN005048583
PN005048589
PN005048600
PN005048617
PN005048626
This is what the support matrix says about these 15k 2Gb 73GB disks.
And since these disks are running on 2Gb interfaces the whole bus needs to be running at 2Gb, on ALL disk enclosures. Switching down from 4 to 2Gb bus speed is disruptive however !

ECN > Support Forums > Coffee Break and then look for "Who am I and why am I here? 2010" discussion.

You cannot plug in the SPE (the first enclosure) in any of the BE ports of another Clariion. DAE's will work though.
The only reason why disks aren't working probably has to do with LCC firmware or disk firmware. I'd open a regular service request with EMC and have them tell you what to do.

Part number is 005048290, disks are qualified. I was thinking before that the CX300 can somehow be connected to any free CX4 BE but now I beleive I am wrong. I agree with your answer. Thank you.

The CX4 will not automatically downgrade the bus if it is running at 4Gb to accommodate 2Gb drives. This is a disruptive process as RRR pointed out and has to be manually done with ALL hosts offline during the process.
That is why your disks did not come online most likely since they cannot operate at the bus speed the enclosures are currently running.

Thank you everyone for your answers. I know enough now and will present basic idea to my boss. If there is need for old 73 GB disks we will connect SPE to the fibre switch and use it. We won't use the disks in CX4.
