Different speed disks in Compellent SCv2020

Our SCv2020 has 12 x 600GB 12G 15K SAS installed at the moment.

Can I add 6 x 1TB 6G 15K SAS and 6 x 900GB 6G 15K SAS in those available slots?

Would 6G makes any difference in terms of performance? Like performance hit? Because the existing 12 disks are 12G.

Can 12G and 6G can be installed in one compellent?

Your advise would be highly appreciated.

Hello again @MarkiB,

Yes, you can mix the disks. The compellent will separate them automatically into tiers.

Hello @MarkiB,

But first, please, make 100% sure the drives you want to add are compellent compatible. Do you have the dell part number so I can confirm it to you?

Yes, you can mix drives of different speeds. But normally, the system will reduce the performance to the slowlest member. So it is not highly recommended. But, of course, you can do it.

Regards.

Hi Diego,

Yes, they are Compellent disks. They are provided by Dell Reseller.

I have currently twelve 600gb 15k 12G SAS disks in first 12 slots.

So, in next twelve unpopulated slots, I am going to install those 900gb 10k 12G SAS disk.

So, the only difference would be 15k and 10k.

I won't be mixing different speed disks into those twelve slots. They will all be 900gb 10k 12g SAS.

Won't Compellent create another tier for slower disks without affecting 15k disks?

So, according to you, would my 15k disks start running in 10k if I installed 10k disks in those twelve slots?

Could you please clarify? Thank you so much.
