Brocade 300 to ISL with MCdata 4500

Hi tehre,

hope you'll be able to help,
I'd like to ISL my existing Brocade 300 firmware 6.1 with a McData 4500 firmware 9,
Would you know how to do it ?
I know how to ISL from a Mcdata to a Brocade but not sure if it's the same from Brocade to McData ?

Thanks for help,

it's the same. You need to make sure Brocade is on version 6.1.2 or 6.2.0e or 6.2.0g and McData is on 9.08.01 or 9.09.03. I had to put my McData into open fabric mode 1.0 and interop mode 3 on Brocade.

I'm sorry for the kidnap, but what if I need an ISL between a Cisco 9124 and a McData 4500 (EMC's DS24M2) ? Both switches are on the latest code. What I need is to get 1 fabric with 2 switches. I know I need to set up something with interop mode on the Cisco, but I have seen fabrics at sites where there was an ISL, but there was no true merge; only the wwpn's in the old McData fabric became visible, not usable (maybe the firmware was too old ?).

Do I need to change domain id's on the McData ? What if there's an HP-UX there ? Won't the FCID change and therefor the addressing to the LUN's ?

So: if in open fabric mode, no domain id change on McData :) ....which is good, since we have an HPUX host attached to the McDatas !
My Cisco's are new ones, so I have the freedom to change whatever we need to change.
If managing the new fabric from the McData solves managing issues, we are fine, since we're already used to do so from there.

I'm not going to play around, I'm only interested in getting it to work for now. I expect the McData's to disappear soon anyway.

i have 9124e (integrated into HP blade enclosure) running 4.1(1b) ISLed to McData ED-140M (9.08). McData was already running in open fabric mode so did not have to do anything there. On cisco i created a vsan and set its interop mode to 1. When i am on the cisco and run "show zone vsan 16", where vsan 16 is my vsan ...i do not see any zones, but when i go into Connetrix Manager to manage McData, i do see cisco in the list of ISL switches. I do all my zoning from Connetrix Manager so zoning information gets pushed down to Cisco. Maybe if i enabled full domain distribution on Cisco i would see the zones as well. On the Cisco i had to chose domain id between 97 and 127.

Hi There,

Just to go back to my original question,

i have a Brocade 300 Firmware 6.1 which has existing zones configured and I'd like toISL with Mcdata 4500 firmware 9.9 .
Can I manage my Zone via Brocade or do I have to manage it from the Mcdata ?

Thnak you

It worked like a charm !
I indeed needed to set up the domain id's as 97 up to 127 in the Cisco's and it was all like you said ! Piece of cake :)

I'm indeed wnodering what would happen when we pull out the McData's later..... I'm not seeing zones, but I do see the zoneset name in the config !

I'm not sure why dynamox had to put his switches in Open Fabric mode. I have several fabrics with mixed B-series and M-series switches running in McData Fabric mode (Interop Mode 2 on the B-series) and it works well.

Our B-series switches are running FOS 6.1.0h and the B series are running 9.8.1 I can do zoning from either the M or B switches, but I tend to use the B-series as I like the FOS interface better for zoning.

when we had to ISL HPQ Brocade 4/24 with McData ED-140M, brocade was running FOS 5.0.1 and Mcdata was on 9.0 and according to our TC we had to use OF. Looks like it's no longer a requirement for FOS 6.x

That would do it! You are correct (and I forgot) that prior to FOS 6.x (possibly 5.3.3) and EOS 9.6.x you couldn't use McData native fabric mode.

We originally had McData native fabrics, so never used the B-series until we had to, and by then they were capable of ISLing with Interop Mode 2.
