Express IBM TotalStorage SAN16B-2 --- 200516B
Hello all,
I am a bit confused when using the ESM for some types of "interchangeability".
May I submit an example?
I am using E-Lab Navigator to elaborate the correct ESM for a customer. He claims he has 2 IBM TotalStorage SAN16B-2 switches running and that he would like to keep them. We need to add a new SAN made up of a new CX3-10c, some IBM x3650 servers running ESX 3.5 and some IBM HBAs.
Fact #1: the IBM TotalStorage SAN16B-2 --- 200516B is not shown in the Connectivity > Switch > IBM section in E-Lab Navigator.
Fact #2: I know that the IBM TotalStorage SAN16B-2 --- 200516B actually is a rebranded version of the Brocade Silkworm 200E.
Fact #3: the Brocade Silkworm 200E is supported in the ESM for my customer.
Question: Is there any kind of "interchangeability" in between switches? Can I use the Brocade Silkworm 200E to generate the ESM and be quite confident that no problems will arise when using the IBM TotalStorage SAN16B-2 in the field?
There is another thread in this forum, referring to a similar question, about Brocade and HP Storageworks switches; such thread states more or less that "they are the same thing".
I'd like to hear from you, as I tried to get the same information from people here and there in EMC Italy and I got many different answers!
Many thanks,
Andrea

I know what you're meaning and I faced the same problem.
The hardware itself is the same, the firmware is also the same.
One difference bitween the different OEMs might be (I spoke with a brocade employee) timing policies and some other small configuration settings but for the host itself it should not make any difference (why, the firmware is still the same...).
the only thing where you might facing problems with this is when you connect different oem switches together.
From my point of view (but i can't assume you any responsibility for that) you can calculate with a "200E".
Best regards
Manfred

thank you for your answer.
I have placed an RPQ request to EMC. I asked to certify IBM switches and I'll see wheter they consider the IBM TotalStorage SAN16B-2 --- 200516B equivalent to the Brocade 200E. I will let you know!
Thank you once again,
Andrea

I can confirm that EMC qualified IBM TotalStorage SAN16B-2 --- 200516B through an RPQ. They just told us that they are equivalent to Brocade Silkworm 200E.
I hope this information may be useful.
