flogi - Port Name vs Node Name

September 15th, 2008 09:00

Hello,

Is your question why are the Node and Port WWN's different? If so, that is normal on a host.

Thank you.

Hello,

Below are the descriptions of both WWPN and WWNN. You should always use WWPN unless instructed to do so for some particular reason. Did you receive any Cisco MDS training as they should have covered it in the class? I strongly recommend everyone attend the EMC or Cisco training on the MDS switch because of its complexity.

Thank you.

============

In computing, a World Wide Port Name, WWPN, or WWpN, is a World Wide Name assigned to a port in a Fibre Channel fabric. Used on storage area networks, it performs a function equivalent to the MAC address in Ethernet protocol, as it is supposed to be unique identifier in the network.

A World Wide Node Name, WWNN, or WWnN, is a World Wide Name assigned to a node (an endpoint, a device) in a Fibre Channel fabric. It is valid for the same WWNN to be seen on many different ports (different addresses) on the network, identyfying the ports as multiple network interfaces of a single network node.

another write up...

World Wide Port_Name (WW_PN): Fibre Channel requires each Port to have an unchangeable WW_PN. Fibre Channel specifies a Network Address Authority (NAA) to distinguish between the various name registration authorities that may be used to identify the WW_PN. A 4-bit NAA identifier, 12-bit field set to 0x0 and an IEEE 48-bit MAC address together make this a 64-bit field.

World Wide Node_Name (WW_NN): Fibre Channel identifies each Node with a unchangeable WW_NN. In a single port Node, the WW_NN and the WW_PN may be identical or may be different.

Yes, that's my question - why does one start with 10 and the other with 20? Which one of these is the true wwn for the HBA?

and if you look at Qlogic HBAs you will see that node name starts with 20 while port name starts with 21.
