Link Failure Messages

Hello All.

Wondered if anyone has run across this?
We have a pair of MDS9513's and have set up dial\mail home, but we continue to receive link failure notifications every time someone reboots a server (which is considerable.)

There is a documented fix (emc115073), but I'm unsure which config file to change. EMC came out to try and resolve, but so far we have been unable to suppress these messages and everyone is getting annoyed with me...

Thanks,

Bowling,
I have three 9509's and was getting the same thing every time we rebooted a server. Needless to say we received a lot of annoying messages when updating 50 SAN attached servers.

I noticed that it was a notification level warning so I just changed the alert level settings for call home in Fabric Manager to level 5, which is warning in the GUI. Since then I stopped getting that level of message but don't seem to have missed any important errors.

I don't think the article is referring to changing an actual file, but the profile and destination settings in the Call Home section of Fabric Manager. Or am I reading that wrong?

I think you are correct related to the second half of your message... (Profile Setting via the GUI)... I changed them to Warning and have not received an error...

Thanks!

That's odd, I would expect the same result from being at error(4) as warning(5).

Have you posted this on the Cisco Storage Networking forum as well? I have received some good help from there before.

That's because I had the option set under the "General" tab under Call Home.
Once I changed the setting under the "Profiles" tab, I stopped receiving the messages - Even though I had unchecked the ports in the "Filters", "Interfaces" tab.

EMC stated that was a bug...?

I changed ours from debug(8) to error(4), but still received the messages.
I'll try warning(5) to see if by chance that doesn't fix things.

Thanks...

On the Profiles tab I have the full_txt and short_txt set to "minor" which seems to be a good level of alerting so far.

I really should read the whole section on Call Home in the Cisco MDS book but I keep falling asleep ;-)

Hello,

I'm the person who tests and documents EMC Email home so I'm sorry to hear the doc is putting you to sleep :) Tough to make it exciting though.

There is no way to stop EMC MDS email home from sending emails out on host reboots via the application. We have an enhancement request into Cisco to do this. The only way to stop this is via the switch by blocking the port before you reboot the host. The application is doing what it is suppose to be doing, namely the connection was lost and it is being reported. You can also stop the FMS service before you do the host reboots and no emails will be generated. Of course this option would stop the rest of the switch monitoring.

Any questions, please let me know.

Oh to be fair CiscoKid, it was the Cisco, not EMC, document, I am sure yours was a captivating read ;-). I was reading the Fabric Manager Config Guide section on Call Home.

Where can I find the EMC documentation on the MDS Email Home? The Connectrix section on Powerlink all seems to be geared towards the Brocade and McData switches. The only there MDS related was the release notes that I could find.

The problem is that the Cisco documentation on Call home is only for Cisco related call home which isn't for EMC sold switches. FM Email Home for MDS switches is particular to EMC and isn't covered in the Cisco docs. The document you need is available to your EMC Customer Engineer only as he/she needs to be directly involved in setting it up. This is because the switches have to be correctly installed in our databases in order for Email home to work correctly. Contact your EMC CE and they can provide you with the documentation and also assist you in configuring it.

Thank you.

Thanks, I will call my local CE. I have three 9509's that were never setup for EMC Call Home because when they were installed (before I was hired) the network manager wanted all Cisco gear supported by Cisco under our SmartNet contract. So naturally he forgot to get the SAN switches on the contract and I did not have supported switches when I had to make a support call one day.

So I have been in the process of getting EMC warranties up to date on all the switches and now need to setup EMC Call Home.

Thanks for the info CiscoKid.
