Upgrading MDS supervisor modules from Gen 1 to Gen 2

Hi All,

We've got an MDS 9509 running SAN-OS 3.2(3a) with dual Gen 1 sup modules, part DS-X9530-SF1-K9. Reading through the NX-OS release notes, I see that these modules will no longer be supported in the NX-OS 4.x family and one must upgrade to the Gen 2 modules.

My question is has anyone had experience doing a sup module upgrade, and can share any gotchas? I see in the upgrade guide that it is a disruptive process, since when the switchover occurs all of the modules in the chassis need to be power cycled, which is a bit of a bummer.

Thanks!
Eddy

Hello,

There was considerable work done between EMC and Cisco to ensure that the upgrade process of Sup1 to Sup2 was as smooth as possible. There was extra testing done at both EMC and Cisco and a complete review of the documentation around it done by both companies. I personally worked with Cisco Engineering on the testing and documentation and it should be pretty complete. We also created and provided special training to our support personnel on it and I created multiple EMC knowlegebase articles on the different problems that could occur. These article relate to what errors to expect in logs if you don't follow the correct procedures on the upgrades.

I can also tell you that I've been in contact with many EMC field people who have done the upgrades without any issues following the instructions provided.

There can of course be exceptions that come up with each individual upgrade but overall the process and documentation has been pretty solid.

EMC Support is always here if you do run into any issues or if you want to plan to work with our field on the actual upgrades.

Thank you.

Thanks CiscoKid.

Do you know if there are any plans to end-of-life support for SAN-OS 3.x on the MDS in favor of NX-OS anytime soon? (ie-require customers to upgrade to Gen 2 supes)

There is currently no timetable with EMC to End of Service Life (EOSL) 3.x SAN-OS code. There will of course be a date in the future that it is decided that 3.x code will End of Life from Cisco though. EMC and Cisco are in discussions on this and we currently have at least one more version of 3.x code that will be released by EMC. We will be keeping our field up to date on the latest updates so they can keep customers informed on when EOL and EOSL will come in the future.

Customer will though need to start planning for the EOL of the 3.x code and the older MDS hardware that isn't supported in 4.x and above code stream. EMC is available to assist in this planning and for the migration process.

Thank you.
