Zone set question Cisco 9513

We are migrating from McData ED-64 to Cisco 9513 directors. We have set the Cisco VSAN to interop mode 4 and have ISL'd the two directors together. We are currently doing zoning from Connectrix Manager on the McData. When I start Fabric Manager on the Cisco switch I do not see any zones or nicknames. From command line the active zone set is there but there is no local zone set information. When I select "Edit Local Full Zone Database" from FM I cannot see any zones or zonesets. The active zone set is there in Command line but no Local full zone database. My concern is when we break the ISL and have to use FM to do zoning how do we see the zones? Hope this is clear.

Hello,

Are you doing this yourself or are you doing this migration with the assistance of EMC? I ask this as there are a variety of limitations and known issues with interop mode 4 that the EMC personnel have access to documentation on. Interop Mode 4 is only supported by EMC under special request (RPQ) for migrations.

With that said, you should be able to see the zone set information if it is configured correctly on both sides. It sounds like there are configuration issues. I would recommend engaging EMC support if you have an RPQ for this configuration.

Thank you.

We are doing it with the assistance of EMC and have an RPQ for the migration. Our EMC rep says that when we break the ISL and change to default Cisco mode that the zones will show up. Not sure if this makes sense so I thought I would ask if anyone else has experienced this. I will pose the question to our EMC rep as well. Thanks for your response.

Hello,

I hate to cause any undue concern as I'm not directly involved in the migration plan and don't have all the details but the statement that the zones will appear when the ISL is broken isn't correct. The EMC Networked Storage Topology Guide, which is the core guide from our Engineering, states the following after the ISL are created between the McData and Cisco switches:

"At the end of this phase, it is highly recommended you verify that zoning information was distributed appropriately to the Connectrix MDS core. You must compare the active zone set on the Connectrix M and Connectrix MDS fabric management tools to verify that there are no differences." (page 267)

In other words, you should be seeing the same zoning information if this is done correctly.

I would recommend you request that the EMC people involved verify that what you have found isn't an issue. As I stated without all the specifics what you are seeing may be correct. It is always a good thing to make sure though. If they have any concerns, they will escalate the issue back to EMC Corporate and it will make it way to an appropriate person here such as myself to check if it is an issue.

Thank you.

OK, we are done and as suspected when we broke the ISL the zones did not magically appear as they were supposed to. We had to run the following command:

# zone copy active-zoneset full-zoneset vsan 12

to populate the full zoneset database. Once we did that everything was fine.

Hope this helps someone else who is trying to do the same thing.
