Clarification on RHCOS Support and Compatibility for PowerEdge R770

Hi Team,

I am writing to clarify the operating system support policy for Red Hat OpenShift deployments on Dell PowerEdge servers.

Specifically, can RHEL certification be treated as equivalent to RHCOS (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Core OS) support in Dell’s technical documentation?

As you know, while RHCOS is optimized for container workloads and based on RHEL, it is a distinct OS. In an OpenShift environment, we have two options for worker nodes (RHEL or RHCOS), whereas the control plane (master nodes) must run on RHCOS.

The gap I've identified:

Looking at the Red Hat Ecosystem Catalog, the PowerEdge R770 is certified for OpenShift:

https://catalog.redhat.com/en/hardware/system/detail/253477#certifications

However, on the official Dell Support page, RHCOS is not explicitly mentioned; only RHEL is listed:

https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/en-us/poweredge-r770/r770_ism_pub/supported-operating-system?guid=guid-707dc967-5899-4f5b-8730-156d1a6291c3&lang=en-us

This discrepancy is also present in the firmware and driver download menus, where RHCOS is missing as a selectable OS.

Since RHCOS is an essential component for any OpenShift environment, I would like to confirm Dell's official stance: Does Dell fully support RHCOS on these platforms, and should we refer to RHEL documentation/drivers for RHCOS deployments?

I look forward to your accurate technical guidance.

Attached are further examples of compatibility pages where RHCOS is not explicitly listed.

My understanding is that Dell treats RHEL and RHCOS as a single category on these pages, given their shared kernel and base. Could you please confirm if this assumption is correct?

Hello @RH-Yamato. This channel is focused on support for Container Storage Module and not on the hardware platform. You may want to post your question to an alternate community channel. As far as Container Storage Modules (CSM) support is concerned, our support matrix is currently on https://dell.github.io/csm-docs/docs/supportmatrix/. We align the CSM support by OCP version and storage array version. The expectation is that whatever hardware platform you chose will support the operating system that you are using.
