Data Domain Upgrade
I have three sites, each has an Avamar connected to a Data Domain 4200 with ES30 expansion shelves.
Questions;
1: The existing ES30 shelves have 2TB drives in them, can I add ES30 shelves that have 3TB drives?
2: One of the DD4200 systems needs to be upgraded to a DD6800. Does the DD4200 have to be upgraded to 6x first?
3: What is the upgrade path from 5.4 to 6.0? Is it 5.4 --> 5.6 --> 5.7 --> 6.0?
I can't find any documentation that says you can mix 2TB and 3TB shelves, it only says the max number of shelves.
I also can't find any documentation on upgrading from 5x to 6x
Since two of these DD's replicate to the third, I assume I will have to upgrade all three along with the Avamar, is that correct?
Thanks.

Hrvoje is correct on all 3 points. I also agree with going doing the upgrade to 5.7 prior to going to DDOS 6.0. You can only do a 2 generation jump when doing a ddos upgrade. so if you are on 5.4 now I would go 5.4 - 5.5 then 5.7 and then to 6.0. I know that is a lot of work but it is better to hit 5.7 prior to going to 6.0 at this point in time. The 6.x code that I wouild recommend is 6.0.1.0.

1) Yes... they must not be on the same chain. Actually, ES20 and ES30 must not be - having ES30 with 2TB and ES30 with 3TB probably works just fine, but I would use different chain just to be sure.
2) Yes... you will need to do headswap, but prior to that update DDOS as only DDOS 6.x understands new hardware (eg. DD6800).
3) Normally you can jump 2 generations ahead so in theory maybe even 5.6 to 6 would work (didn't check docs), but I would also do 5.7 first.
You can't mix 2TB and 3TB within same disk shelf. Number of disk shelves also depends on capacity you have because memory you have within unit can only address certain amount of capacity. It would be wise to engage someone from your support to verity steps and then off you go.

DDOS UPGRADE:
An upgrade to release 5.6 can be performed only from systems using release families 5.3, 5.4 or 5.5.
Only Data Domain systems running DD OS 5.6.1.x, later releases of 5.6, and 5.7.x can upgrade directly to DD OS 6.0.
So... Upgrade to 5.6.2.0 then to 6.0.
DDOS wants a 2 family gap max for replication between 2 systems. so you can upgrade all 3x DD's to 5.6.2.0 and then again to 6.0.
Note: don't forget to reboot the DD's before you upgrade.
You can mix 2TB and 3TB shelves on the same loop but please check (disk show hardware) that they are all SAS disks/shelves and not a mixture of SATA and SAS ES30 shelves, these ES30 shelf types cannot share a loop.
