DataDomain failed to upgrade

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to upgrade dd860 from OS 5.7.4.0 to 6.0.0.32

but it fails with the error message "System upgrade failure: Upgrade precheck failed: full index files are in old format which is not supported by new DDOS version: please contact support for assistance"

Currently im trying to get support from DellEMC assistance in my area, but im also trying my luck here.

Do you guys have a solution for this?

Thx in advance,

Raviv.

860 with 6.0? I would not put my hand in fire that combo is supported.

That's head upgrade and it is related to HW.  You are talking about placing DDOS6 on DD860 which is quite old.  Year ago we already had a case where someone tried to place newer DDOS on older HW and it didn't work.  So you may wish to check that with official folks first.  DDOS6 contains many different drivers which may no longer be fit for HW old as DD860.

Hi Ravivz,

So checking the DDOS 6.0.0.32 release notes (https://support.emc.com/docu82082_Data-Domain-Operating-System-6.0.0.32-Release-Notes.pdf?language=en_US) shows that a DD860 is listed as supported so in theory the upgrade should be possible.

That being said the upgrade pre-check scripts checks that DDFS indices are in the 'index 2.0' format otherwise the upgrade will abort with the error you mentioned.

Note that systems which were initially deployed running DDOS 5.4 (or earlier) would have had indices in the 'index 1.0' format. 'Index 2.0' was introduced in DDOS 5.5 so any systems initially deployed with this or later would have had indices in the 'index 2.0' format from the start.

As mentioned by kizilb once a system with indices in 'index 1.0' format is upgraded to DDOS 5.5 (or later) indices are automatically converted to 'index 2.0' by running clean. Note, however, that only ~1% of indices are converted during each clean so it can take a considerable amount of time before the conversion is complete.

As a result you can either:

- Leave the system running 5.7 for the foreseeable future then retry the upgrade at a later time (hopefully after the conversion is complete)

- Contact support to perform a one time index rebuild (which will recreate indices in 'index 2.0' format). Note that this requires a complete outage of the system for a number of hours whilst the indices are rebuilt, can only be performed by support, but does not cause any loss of data

Hopefully that helps.

Thanks, James

We have an old DD160 and had the same problem. "System upgrade failure: Upgrade precheck failed: full index files are in old format which is not supported by new DDOS version: please contact support for assistance" We did not have any data on the DD so I destroyed the filesystem and upgraded the DD's firmware and created the filesystem again.

I was inspired by the responce by @James_Fordto do this.

At the end i tried to upgrade a day later and it worked

i guess i had to wait for the index to completely convert as @James_Ford said.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Hello.

The general rule of thumb when upgrading the DDOS from any version to any other version is to allow the system at least 48 hours before upgrading to the next version.  There are a few reasons for this that need to be understood:

- ensuring all clients backup properly

- ensure restores work properly

- ensuring the replication works properly

- ensuring the maintenance cycles complete properly

Allowing time for a full backup / replication / maintenance cycle to complete between upgrades is important for any backup products.

Another item to keep in mind is the compatibility of DDBoost with the version of the DDOS that is being installed.  If you have the incorrect DDBoost version, you will have difficulty with the backups and restorations.

The compatibility guide will help you determine what is needed for the different versions of DDOS.  There is some overlap, which allows for an upgrade to a higher version of DDOS and then gives you time to update the DDBoost.

Here is the link to the compatibility guide:  http://compatibilityguide.emc.com:8080/CompGuideApp

I always recommend reviewing the compatability guide before performing any upgrade.  There have been too many times when customers are no longer able to perform functions with their backup software because of a compatibility issue.  Restores are the most common issue.

@James_Ford is correct.  DDOS 6.0 is supported on the DD860.
