Disable Deduplication

Is there a way to disable the hardware dedupe on data domain?  I haven't dealt with them before, but other storage solutions I've worked with would allow it.  The numbers I'm seeing are significantly less than the Commvault numbers I'm used to.  Plus I feel like if I use the hardware      dedupe, I'll be stuck using Data Domain forever.

Hi, the simple answer is no, since it's not really 'hardware dedupe' - it's the entire end to end software process in a DD that distils duplicate data and then compresses it - it simply uses hardware like an NVRAM card as a fundamental part of that. It's not like tape drive hardware compression or a HIFN card in a traditional VTL type system.

The longer answer is that if you do not see good dedupe on the Data Domain that it is most likely due to how the backups are sent or the content of those backups (e.g: compressed or encrypted), perhaps the previous Commvault implementation that was performing backups to a more simple backup target device now need to be enhanced to make use of the inbuilt features and abilities in your DD - just a thought? Most folk agree it's an improvement to use DD.

There is a lot of talk about fixed block dedupe (Commvault) vs variable block (DD) - variable should help get better compression of stored backups on your DD but I'm sure Commvault will disagree and tell you that there is a variable option that you can enable for some backup types.

DD is entirely built to dedupe data, it cannot be turned off.

Possibly I missed something about your environment but obviously it's hard to tell from a brief chat here.

Perhaps, if you are unhappy with your DD implementation, that you could engage your local sales team to highlight your concerns and they could dig deeper on your concerns to show you the value of Data Domain with Commvault and make you want to keep it, rather than feel like you're stuck with it.

They want you to like and enjoy this technology.

Regards, Jonathan
