Our approach was to configure replication to start after the production server's backup window completed, just after checkpoint and garbage collection. We then replicate backups throughout the day. The trade-off to replication is, during the replication window, you are limited to retiring clients that are in the middle of being replicated. Aside from that, we have very few other issues.
