Increase Storage capacity on data domain DD4200 & DD890

Need to know if how much disk capacity i can increase on DD4200 and DD890?

Currently DD4200: 64TB and DD890: 64TB & 128TB.

Please help me with this.

Be wary when talking about specific models and the amount of shelves (number of) vs RAW or useable storage figures.

You really should engage your SE to calculate this for you where possible.

The DD890 can be complex, SAS cables (length and type) are important when you order new ES30 shelves if you have ES20's - here is why;

DD890 = 384TB RAW or 12 shelves (whichever you reach sooner).

That figure is calculated based on 12x ES20 shelves with 2TB disks - which are therefore 32TB RAW each from 16 slots).

ES30 shelves with 2TB have 15 slots so are 30TB RAW. So 12 shelves is still the max with 12x 30TB ES30’s.

If you have ES20's in your system now, you cannot share ES20's and ES30's on the same set (loop) - EMC made a bypass rule for the DD890 to allow you to add up to 16 shelves to accommodate an awkward issue where you have ES20's essentially "ransoming" a loop/set of shelves. But you still can't exceed 384TB (RAW).

It's that mixture of ES20's and ES30's that cause complexity.

DD4200.

Assuming your system was not a headswap controller upgrade from an older system that had ES20’s.

Also, that it is not an extended retention system (formerly called DD Archiver).

The max is 8 shelves of ES30’s (2TB disks – 30TB RAW) OR 240TB RAW – whichever you reach sooner – 45TB shelves (15x3TB) will reduce your possible shelf count max to below 8.

DD4200 uses SAS disks in ES30 shelves and are not compatible with DD890, you cannot add SATA ES30's to the DD4200 either, only a headswap upgrade will allow a DD4200 to host ES20 or SATA ES30 shelves as part of the upgrade.

Hope that helps.

Jonathan

Hi,

The maximum usable capacity of the Data Domain 4200 appliance is up to 189TB and the Data Domain 890 appliance is up to 285.6TB.

Check the datasheet for the 4200 at: https://www.emc.com/collateral/specification-sheet/h11340-datadomain-ss.pdf

Thanks,
Tim.

For DD890, I can say since I use that model, you can add up to 12 disk shelves and each will give you around 21.7TB usable.  You can see how many ds you use with disk show state command for example (you should see head with 4 disks and most likely DS30 with 15 disks).
