DPA using a repository Oracle database

Hello,

I have a query about the Oracle database that DPA uses as a repository and its o/s compatibilty.

We have been using EBA & DPA for some time now.

Our DPA server, running v5.5.0 currently sits quite happily on a Solaris 10 server, talking to and using a Oracle 10.2 database sitting on AIX 5.3

We have no problems with this configuration at all.

Now I am planning to upgrade my DPA to v5.7, so I start reading the Pre-Installation Checklist. Now it tells me that the only

for setting up the DPA repository database for Recoverability Analysis it can be Oracle on Solaris

or for backup monitoring only it can be Oracle on Solaris or Linux.

Now neither of these suggested platforms is immediately available in my environment. Do I need to worry, or should I just just upgrade and be damned.

When WysDm consulting put our first version of EBA in, there was no specification as to the platform that the Oracle database had to be on.

I'd be grateful for thoughts.

Felix

As far as I know, Jason is correct, the DPA Server itself must run on Solaris or Windows for DPA/RA but the oracle db server can be hosted on any OS.  To be 100% sure, I would recommend opening an SR and get Support to verify it for you.

Also note, that DPA/RA is a separately licensable feature but even if you are not planning to use it or license it, you still need to create the illuminator schema and user as the installer will still need to prepare the database.

I fell into the same confusion when I was first reading the docs

That Recoverability Analysis requirement is only for the DPA Server, not to do with the DPA database. So in your case your server is on Solaris so you are fine.

The Data Protection Advisor 5.7 Compatibility Matrix does not specify a platform for the database, only application and version.  However the Installation Guide states:

Data Protection Advisor supports the following databases:
◆ Oracle in Solaris and Linux environments

My guess is that it has not been certified on AIX but as you have been working okay with it then it probably will be okay; however it is sensible to check with EMC.
