OME & AWS

Hi,

I've deployed OpenManage Enterprise 3.5 within our on-prem datacenter. The I readded our servers. It looks OK, app is working as expected.
But within 1 year we are migrating from our own datacenter to AWS. Still we would like to have OME running in AWS to monitor our Dell servers located around. This raises 2 different questions:
1. Is there a OME image suitable for AWS (AWS AMI)? Or is it planned within 1 year time?
2. If answer is no - there is an option to migrate OME (like any other Linux machine) to AWS. But as in AWS there is no direct access to console we would need at least ssh access to OME. This unfortunately is blocked and can only be enabled via Dell support (FSD mode) for short period of time.
Is it possible to get ssh access available for unlimited time?

Hello,

I reached out to a colleague of mine who interacts with the OpenManage development team periodically. Best I can say at this time is that AWS support is something that they have in the feature backlog, but isn't formally on the roadmap at this time. With that in mind, there's really no forecasting or estimation I could give you with any sense of reliability on when or if it will be official.

Speaking to your other question in regard to permanent FSD mode access, there isn't a way that I'm aware of to do that, unfortunately. Depending on what you're looking to do, you might look at using the OpenManage API. I do say that with the caveat that I'm not familiar with the API and the features that it offers, just that it exists and might be useful to you.

Please let me know if there's any other info I may be able to help locate for you.

Hi @Dell-DylanJ ,

thank you for prompt answer. As Dell OME 4 AWS is on the roadmap for the future then maybe it is possible to setup (open) ssh via FSD mode for 2-3 years? Until OME 4 AWS is released? Then I can easily migrate existing OME for now and deploy native one when it will be available?

Hi Dariusz,

as Dylan already mentioned:

"peaking to your other question in regard to permanent FSD mode access, there isn't a way that I'm aware of to do that, unfortunately."

So, you might leverage RestfulAPI of OME in order to manage the appliance in AWS. Here I found the reference manual for you:

https://dl.dell.com/topicspdf/dell-openmanage-enterprise_reference-guide2_en-us.pdf

Hope that helps in regards to your queries.

Cheers
Stefan

Hi @ste ,

but what do you mean by "peaking to your other question in regard to permanent FSD mode access, there isn't a way that I'm aware of to do that, unfortunately"?

When you unblock rootshell via FSD you can specify start & end date? And end date can be anywhere in the future. I was able to set it to 01.01.2023 So there is no way to do that or Dell is now willing to sign dat.ini file with rootshell (ssh) enabled for so long time period?

Hello,

Providing FSD mode is not an option, unfortunately. I know this'll be disappointing, but FSD isn't something we expose, save for when the appliance isn't working correctly.

Just to reiterate, AWS is NOT on the roadmap right now. It is something that they're looking at, but I cannot say it's on the roadmap, because it isn't at this time (based on what I was told). I don't want to give the mistaken impression that this is an near-future feature. It is only something being considered.

If the OpenManage API isn't going to work for you, you might consider using the OpenManage .MIB pack and a 3rd party monitoring software. There may be something out there that already supports AWS. I can't speak to the capabilities of any, but it may be worth looking into.

Is there an update on this topic? it has been almost two years since last reply this post, I am interested on deploying a new Dell OME console in AWS. Is that supported?

Thank you

It's still not on the roadmap officially. there is a plan to expand some features like SSO, to allow AWS to be a provider for SSO, but I am not certain if that would expand to being able to deploy it or not.
