Dell R350 decrease fan speed
I have a new server at customer side but this server is too noisy and rack is in the office.
I`ve tried to decrease fan spees via idrac9 (express) or OMSA but maximum which I can achieveis 50% speed.
My current settings ares, Thermal profile optimization is set to Sound Cap, Fan Speed Offset is OFF and Minimum Fan Speed is set to default.
Current fans speed are 48-50% (9-10k rpm) and this is too noisy.
Customer is very dissatisfied and I don`t know what can I do with this new server.

No there is no problem with temp in the office or rack.
CPU1 Temp is 33 C, system board exhaust temp 31, system board iniet temp 27, max dimm temp 29 (all temp are reading temp from idrac). There is issue fan speed can be set under 50% and I don`t know why.

Hello,
a server, especially a rack version, is not made to be installed in an office, as it is noisy .
Have you updated iDRAC and BIOS?
I also recommend that you read this information regarding fansDELL- Marco B

No my question is, did you tried to update iDRAC firmware and BIOS? Which version are installed?
If you check this documentation pag 30 you have the server with category 3 acoustically usage.
It depends also about the configuration of the server. Anyway you can see that LpA value is 40 dB.
That can be ok for an noisy office but you can hear it if th office is really quiet.

I tried idrac via bios too, there is limit 50% too.
I don`t agree with the regard because this server can be use in office too.
This is from technical guide:
Dell EMC PowerEdge R350 is a rack-mount server appropriate for attended data center environment. However, lower acoustical
output is attainable with proper hardware or software configurations. For example, the minimum configuration of R350 is quiet
enough for typical office environment.and another citaion from this guide.
Table 20. Acoustical performance of R350 acoustical configurations
40dB in idle and 60dB in feature rich...sorry 40dB is noise from your fridge not from your compresor...because 9000rpm is noise like compresor.
Btw server config Xeon E-2314, 16GB RAM, 2xSSD a the only noise is made by system fans.
There is only one issue stupid setup in 50% limit
I`am going to make upgrade (6.00.30.15 to 6.10.30.20) and we`ll see.
Mate I swear this noise from fans in 50% is really annoying and nobody would want to hear it in noisy or really quiet office;o).
Edit: As I feared no change with newest idrac fw...stil 50% barrier.
Ok I`ve tried to change fan speed via impitool but there is a problem with privileges.
Any hint guys?

Hello,
you can try setting the user privilege to level 4 which is Admin level and try the command again.
Unfortunately i didn't found any documentation, only this but it is related to another system

Dear Dell experts,
I am having the same problem on IDRAC 6.10.30.20 and the latest BIOS (1.6.3). The problem is that the minimum fan speed can't be set under 50%, and 50% is simply too noisy (65dB) directly near the server.
Your idea to set the privilege level to 4 is not helpful, the root user has already Administrator rights...
Please check your firmwares and publish a BIOS/IDRAC version where it is possible to set the minimum to 20% or something else where the noise level is not as loud as a mower in 10m distance, I don't understand why the server has to be this noisy, if the inlet temperature is low enough...
Kind regards,

Hello thanks for choosing Dell. But I'm afraid there's nothing we can do basically at this point: you have updated your firmware, And 15G, the IPMI privilege has been revoked as well. We could wait to see what other contributors would think but I also doubt that what else would be avaialble. Sorry I couldn't be of help this time.

Hello thanks for choosing Dell.
Is the temperature in the room high(er)?
Do you have anything plugged in the PCI slot?
