Network Discovery

We're building a new OME server, and noticed in the First Time Setup, step 9 - it says to Turn on Network Discovery on Servers running 2008 and later. All our servers have discovery turned off.

How will that impact OME? Is it worth enabling it on our servers?

OME is version 1.3 and SQL Server is 2012 SP1 Express

Thanks!

Hi,

Network discovery is a setting which allows your server to be visible to other servers. So, it makes sense to enable it on the servers. It is more of a firewall setting.

You can get more information about network discovery @http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/what-is-network-discovery#1TC=windows-7

Hi Pupul,

I understand Network Discovery allows other Windows based servers/computers to see each other on the network, but what benefits does this have with OME specifically? Am I losing functionality with OME by leaving this setting disabled?

Thanks!

To be honest I can't recall myself the history of this setting.  I thought that it was something you had to do on the OME server itself in the Windows OS settings in order to enable SNMP based discovery.

If you do _not_ have this setting on your OME box and you are still able to discover and inventory servers via SNMP, then I suppose you are ok :)

Feel free to do some experiments and report back!

Thanks,

Rob
