OpenManage Essentials Email Alerts not working

Short story....

Built new Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Virtual Server.

Installed OME and all prereqs.

Set SNMP on one Target server.  Discovered Server.

Set smtp server for email.

Sent test email > Worked.

Added it to the domain the next day.

Sent test email > Didn't Work.

Scratched head, removed from domain, sent test email > Worked.

Re-added server to domain, test email sent > Worked, then Stopped working.

Removed server from domain, sent test email > Worked.

Not sure what's going on while the server is connected to the Domain.  While it's connected to the Domain, both the Troubleshooting tool and sendmail.exe work just fine.  I ran netstat after trying to send a test email and I see a connection to the email relay server but it just sits there and I would assume it just times out.  Is there some weird internal setting that makes it try to automatically authenticate to the SMTP server when on a domain? via the user or computer account?  I've seen similar posts, not sure what the issue is.  Any ideas?

Thanks for the post.

Also see this thread.

It is probably a credentials issue where you don't have permissions any more to send mail.

We are fixing this in the next release of OME (Q1) to allow you to set user/pw.  So that should fix the issue.  To work around or test, you could put an SMTP server on the OME box but that would be a bit ugly.  Just useful for testing the feature.

Thanks,

Rob

Thanks.  I really appreciate your feedback.  I will pass your SMTP notes over to the team to review.

Please keep us posted on your progress and observations with OME.

I have setup a temporary SMTP server on my new OpenManage Essentials server.  Told it to only authenticate from it's own IP and then used SmartHost to forward all messages to the Corporate Relay server.  Set OME to use itself as the SMTP server and I have yet to have issues.  If i had to guess, what OME is doing is that when on a domain, it's trying to automatically authenticate with it's computer account or something.  Our email relay servers require no authentication and if you supply credentials anyway, it will fail.  This will work in the mean time to fix this issue.

That aside, so far I'm enjoying the ease of use over the DMC.  I have already moved all monitoring over to this new server and I've happily deleted my DMC Virtual Server.  I think with further development, this will be a nice and easy system to deploy and use.
