Alert! System battery voltage is low. Strike the F1 key to continue, F2 to run the setup utility.
Hey everyone. I've got a Dimension 8300 desktop. It's about 5 years old. I got keep getting this message upon startup, along with 2 beeps in quick succession.
I'm guessing this is my motherboard battery running low, but I'm not quite sure what to do. Does it recharge? Do I have to replace it? If so, how? Is it worth doing or should I ditch the computer altogether?
Help me and I'll give you prizes.

I have an Optiplex 755. I had the same system battery alert and press f1 message. I replaced the battery with a brand new one ordered from Dell. I did it carefully, and am certain it went in correctly. I updated the BIOS entries (and the current time now shows correctly), and started, turned off, and re-started three times, but still I get the message "system battery voltage is low ... press F1". I guess I am just going to have to live with it.
Update: I just read Osprey's entry, and followed that advice (quoted below). Still "system battery voltage is low". Oh well.

Boot to the BIOS and make sure your drive and boot settings are correct for your hardware. Have you tried clearing the NVRAM? After a hardware change it is not uncommon for the hardware information stored in the NVRAM to not be updated properly. This can cause an F1 - F2 boot up problem such as you are experiencing. To clear the NVRAM, just do this:
1. Reboot system and enter the BIOS Setup by pressing F2.
2. Turn on Caps Lock, Scroll Lock and Num Lock.
3. Press ALT + E then ALT + F (should hear beep) then ALT + B
