The 960 is the max.
Re: DELL OptiPlex GX620 - FAQ - Frequently Asked (and answered ...
Both versions of Pentium D 960 (SL9K7 - D0 - 95W) or (SL9AP - C1 - 130W) will need DELL Performance Heatsink J9761.
I also recommend Arctic Silver 5 (Thermal Paste).

Core2 Duo is not validated, supported, listed in the bios release notes.
Unless czarsun comes back with an "S Spec" of what 6300 he is talking about then I doubt that it works or is possible.

Is there really that much of a difference between the Pentium D 960 and the Pentium D 945?

I suggest trying it yourself.
An E6300 can be had on eBay for about $30.

The chipset may support a subset of the Duo's but I suspect that it will F2 to continue unsupported processor if it works at all

The GX620 DOES NOT Support Core 2 Duo.
Officially
Intel Pentium D 840 HH80551PG0882MN
(BX80551PG3200FN / BX80551PG3200FT)
The Mini Tower with 305watt power supply and Bios A11 will support a D 960 with the copper heatsink.

But Czarsun said:
"The GX620 MT does support Core 2 Duo 6300. I am running that setup right now. Bios A11 is enough to support. Originally, a Pentium D 960 3.60 Ghz had been running in the machine."
Have you personally tried it?
My mother is running one of these still and its "enough" for her needs. I'd be very curious if the 840EE or 965EE would run in it. Has anyone actually tried this? I'd like to do one last small upgrade like that for her computer. She's currently running a P4 661 ES.

Look at the OPTIPLEX GX620 FAQ en.community.dell.com/.../19549083.aspx

Guys - read my post again, I was curious if the 840EE and 965EE would work. I didn't ask about the Core series any further then pointing out another user got it to work and asked if Speedstep had tried it out before banishing the idea.

If I had a GX620, a Core would be the CPU I tried.

Let say this way, official Dell moderators and non Dell supporters like SpeedStep would provide valuable information within official parameters and we, users really appreciate for their help. However, when users tweak their PCs beyond official Dell recommendations please do not expect any confirmation from them in questions of upgrading processors beyond official max level and any overclocking of cheap Dells. In cases like this only us, users can confirm any upgrades beyond Dell's limits, so if someone confirms "The GX620 MT does support Core 2 Duo 6300" this could be very true. I just can say that mine Inspiron 570 CPU upgraded beyond Dell official max and overclocked!
Coming back to original question, if you provide your BIOS date I will check which CPU might work hypothetically.
