Blue Screen ***STOP: 0x00008086 error...

I presently have a Dimension 8400 that daily is giving me a blue screen that under Technical Information displays the following: ***STOP: 0x00008086 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). The only alternative I have is to push the power button to reboot. After rebooting a message screen displays a path which takes me to Intel website to ChipSet screen. I have download and installed the driver for the chipset, however I am still experiencing the STOP: 0x00008086 blue screens.

Are there any suggestions of fixing this issue?

Thanks,
trwctw

i am packing an nec drive also, and i'm getting the bsod. i'm going to uninstall spy sweeper too, it's expired anyways. i have disabled the auto startup a few times, but it still doesn't wanna work. f12 diagnostics pulls up no problems for me..... i guess i better check into that chipset update just to make sure while i'm at it here.

that's very interesting. i didn't start getting my bsod until a little while after i installed my secondary hard drive too. is yours by any chance a maxxtor?

close. i used to work for a manufacturer (also not dell. by the way, dell training is actually very excellent. i am familiar with it.) it's two or three weeks usually, training is very intense and anyone can learn it if they pay good attention. then yes, thrown to the wolves. the smart ones that are better unfortunately, no they don't get promoted often. the useless agents you talk to do. you can imagine to what kind of problems that leads to.

Dell Dimension 9100 Rhapsody on Windows XP Blue Screen of death BSOD Stop 0x00008086

Hello,

Saw an old thread about getting a BSOD with stop code 0x00008086.  I was getting the same Blue Screen error when installing and using the Rhapsody music player on my Dell 9100.

The culprit seems to be a combination of the Rhapsody Helix DRM Manager and the Intel / Dell drivers for the SATA drives.

I fixed the problem by (in this order)

1) Installing the lastest version of the Intel Matrix Storage Manager driver,
 http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=2101

2) Upgrading the BIOS (from Dell's website)

3) Switching the drive controller setting in the BIOS from RAID Autodetect/AHCI to RAID Autodetect/ATA.
 a) Start the computer, and then press to enter the Setup program.
 b) Use the to select Drives, and then press to expand the Drives node.
 c) Use the to select Drive Controller:
 d) If the Drive Controller setting is RAID Autodetect/AHCI, set Drive Controller to RAID Autodetect/ATA.
 e) Press , use the to select Exit, and then press .

The first step got me past the install of Rhapsody, but the system was unstable until I completed the last two steps.

Hope this helps others.

I know this thread is old, but i am experiencing the stop error 8086 regularly and would like to install the Intel Matrix Storage Manager for my Intel 82801FR SATA AHCI controller.  However the instructions from Intel are below:

5.1 General Installation Notes

1. If you are installing the operating system on a system
configured for RAID or AHCI mode, you must pre-install
the Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager driver using the
F6 installation method described in section 5.3.

2. The 'Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility'
must be installed on the system after a supported
Microsoft* Windows* operating system has been installed.

3. To install the Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager,
    double-click on the self-extracting and self-installing
setup file and answer all prompts presented.

4. By default, all installed files (readme.txt, help, etc.)
are copied to the following path:

  \Program Files\Intel\Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager

5.2 Windows Automated Installer* Installation from Hard
    Drive or CD-ROM

Note: This method is applicable to systems configured for
      RAID or AHCI mode.

1. Download the Intel(R) Matrix Storage Manager setup file
and double-click to self-extract and to begin the setup
    process.

2. The 'Welcome' window appears. Click Next to continue.

3. The 'Uninstallation Warning' window appears. Click
    Next to continue.

4. The 'Software License Agreement' window appears. If you
agree to these terms, click Yes to continue.

5. The ‘Readme File Information’ window appears. Click
    Next to continue.

6. The 'Choose Destination Location' window appears.
    Click Next to continue.

7. The 'Select Program Folder' window appears. Click
Next to continue installing the driver.

8. If the Windows Automated Installer* Wizard Complete window
is shown without a prompt to restart the system, click the
Finish button and proceed to step 8. If it is shown with a
prompt to restart the system, click 'Yes, I want to
restart my computer now.' (the default selection) and
click the Finish button. Once the system has restarted,
    proceed to step 8.

9. To verify that the driver was loaded correctly, refer
    to section 6.

5.3 Pre-Installation Using the F6 Method.

Note: The Steps 1 and 2 can be skipped if you use the F6 Floppy
disk utility provided by Intel. This utility can also be
downloaded from the following website. These methods
are applicable to systems configured for RAID or
      AHCI mode.

    http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df/Product_Filter.asp?
    ProductID=2101

1. Extract all driver files from the installation package.
See section 7.2 for instructions on extracting the
    files.

2. Create a floppy* containing the following files in the root
    directory:
    iaAhci.inf, iaAhci.cat,
    iaStor.inf, iaStor.cat,
    iaStor.sys, and
    TxtSetup.oem.

As my Dell 8400 has no floppy drive and I am running Windows XP SP3, I have no way to create a floppy, so how do I proceed?

Thanks,
LHC

Floppy Disk is required for AHCI (its not optional)otherwise you must use ATA mode.  There are an extremely limited number of USB floppy drives that work with XP in this mode.  Use of the Floppy disk is NOT OPTIONAL.

USB floppy disk drive when you press F6 to install mass storage drivers during a Windows XP installation operation.

This issue occurs if the USB floppy disk drive is not supported for use during Windows XP installation.

To be supported in this situation, the drive must be listed in the Txtsetup.sif file.

The following USB floppy disk drives are included in the Txtsetup.sif file and are therefore supported for use during Windows XP installation:

Plug and Play ID USB floppy disk drive model
USB\VID_03EE&PID_6901 Mitsumi
USB\VID_057B&PID_0000 Y-E Data; Sony part number 09K9835
USB\VID_0644&PID_0000 TEAC; IBM option part number 27L4226, FRU 05K9283

The following USB floppy disk drives are not included in the Txtsetup.sif file and therefore are not supported during Windows XP installation:

Plug and Play ID USB floppy disk drive model
USB\VID_03F0 &PID_2001 HP
USB\VID_054C &PID_002C Sony
USB\VID_057B &PID_0001 Y-E Data
USB\VID_0409 &PID_0040 NEC
USB\VID_0424 &PID_0FDC SMSC

So please advise how to use the ATA mode to update the Intel Matrix Storage Manager

July 4th, 2013 22:00

Hello.

I’m so glad to have found this thread.  I began having the 0x00008086 stop error after doing a fresh install of windows XP Professional on my Dell 8400. The one thing I did different then the way this comp has been running for years was I moved my larger Seagate HD and made it my primary with this installation.  I then installed my programs, updated all my drivers etc., and then began having this error intermittently as most of you described back in 2005. I was at a loss because sending an error report gave me the answer: “Windows couldn’t find any solution to your problem.”  I saw earlier in the thread that the problem reporter used to refer you to some kind of remedy but apparently that has changed.  I was very relieved to find this thread and a workable solution.

It’s too soon to tell if this is a total win because I found and installed the Matrix utility this morning (after powering on my computer resulted in this BSOD) but so far no issues.

I will update as time goes on to let you/others who may be experiencing this issue now know if the problem returns.

Kudos to (in no specific order) The4Bs, NCJohn, Medford, Ragamuffin143 and all the other brave people in this thread who took the plunge, tested this fix, and shared the fix information in such a detailed manner for the rest of us.  In that same tradition I hope this updated the info works for anyone facing this issue now, since most of the old links no longer work.

First I hope to save time by saying that the expert site that The4Bs first found the solution on now requires you to sign up for a 30 free trial (using a credit card) before you can view the solution, so you no longer get an opportunity to view anything more than the problem/help request.   I’m not disparaging their site in anyway just noting that you can save yourself the trouble since I did get the trial to see what was there.  It turns out that very long answer thread on their page ended by referring you to the actual first success story found by “Baron Nogood” in a thread here.

That info can also be found by googling "8086 and bugcheck"

You can read there to get the gist of what The4Bs &NCJohn were talking about in their solution. The file that they used to fix this problem: “iata57.exe” i.e., the Intel® Matrix Storage Manager, was new back in ’05 but Intel now has (what the site calls) the final version of this Manager: “iata70.” here:

https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&DwnldID=15449&lang=eng&wapkw=intel+matrix+storage+manager+chipset+925#help

There are four choices on that page:

f6flpy3270.zip

f6flpy64.zip

iata70_enu.exe

iata70_cd.exe

I used the “iata70_enu.exe” file.

I hesitated for a moment because the readme file gives you a checklist.  Step 6 says:

6.  From the Device Manager, look for an entry named

'IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers'. If this entry is

present, expand it and look for one of the following

   controllers:

This was mine:

   - 'Intel(R) 82801FR SATA AHCI Controller'

If the controller above is present, the system is

an ICH6R system in AHCI mode and no further action

     is required.

But this post from earlier in this thread quoted here made consider installing it.:

‘Quote: Posted by Medford on 09-27-2005 10:09 PM

The4Bs

I went to one of the links you posted for Intel, checked my Hardware in Device manager, located my Intel controller and came up with this info in the " Readme.txt " for the Intel download :

'Intel(R) 82801FR SATA AHCI Controller'

If the controller above is present, the system is an

ICH6R system in AHCI mode and no further action is required."

This is what I have showing in my device manager properties and my chip is the Intel(R)925X Express chipset Family, with memory controller : 82925X , I/O controller : Intel(R)82801FR and I/O controller hub - ICH6R.

So, even according to this Readme file on Intel's site, I need not download the fix...and this is basically what I was told initially by Dell. So, what is the problem... I usually leave my computer on for days at a time, since I am using Winfax to receive and send faxes, and the BSOD seems to occur mostly after a reboot. For me, since June 20th or therabouts I've had 7 to 9 BSOD events, and therefore it's an average of about every 12-14 days , and the last one was on September 21st.....???”

His resulting loss of that BSOD error after installing this “fix” led to my decision to try it anyway.  Apparently it still needed to be updated or something so I went ahead and installed it.

I didn’t download the floppy version since others reported that the regular file worked well in ’05.  I booted my computer in safe mode just to be sure that no programs interfered with the installation.  Everything went smoothly and has been running fine since this morning.

If I ever need to do a clean install again I’d most likely add this file to my driver installation right after the chipset utility software as the Intel Matrix instructions suggest more or less in the readme.

The 'Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility'

must be installed on the system after a supported

Microsoft* Windows* operating system has been installed.”

Crossing my fingers that this is the end of that error for me, and that this updated information works for everyone else as well. I will update after some time has passed without incident or sooner if need be.

Still running smoothly without incident since applying this fix. :D
