Can`t Open Files?

Iam having trouble opening my files everytime I click on a file in my documents. When I click on a File a window opens and says: Select witch program you want to open this file with? Also if I download a program from C-Net or ZD-Net it does the same thing, And I can`t get the file to open and I end up deleting it.

And I don`t know witch file to use. Please Help!

Thanks Hoss

Which version of Windows are you running?  If you first open the program that is supposed to open the file and then open the file from within the program, does it work?  Have you checked your system for viruses using up-to-date virus definitions.

Hi,

You have somehow associated the wrong program with the particular type of file you are trying to open on whatever model computer under whatever operating system.

Basic instructions to solve this without knowing these details

Open WIndows Explorer and ensure you are viewing all files.

Select one of the type of file that is not opening properly. Don't Open it at this stage.

Hold the Shift Key Down and then Right Click on the file. Now select the program that you want to open the file from the list available. Put a tick in the box for Always Open this type of File with this Program.

What type of file are you trying to open and do you have the ( or a ) correct program on your computer to open it. For Example unless you have MS Word you cannot open MSWord *.doc files.

I use Norton Antivirus, And when I do a complete scan it does not find any viruses so i know that can`t be it. When I click on a file in my documents or one that I might have downloaded and save in a temp folder. Then when I go to open it thats when it ask me to pick a file to open the file with and put a bullet beside it to always open the program I pick.

Running XP Pro on a Dim 8100.

Thanks for the Reply,

Hoss

Thats what is happening when I try to open a file.

Sorry I forgot to say that Iam running Dimension 8100 Windows XP Pro. The files that I have trouble opening is just common files like exe, even some of my pictures it does that. It always does it if I download a program from web-site.
