Com Port not working

I am trying to connect a Netlink device (which allows a runner's watch to download information to the internet) to the Com port of my Dimension 4550. The computer does not seem to recognize it and it does not work. The service person for the hardware device said it is possible that the port is reserved or in use by some other software installed on the system and therefore will not let any other device use it. Is this correct? If so, how do I check this out and correct it? The Netlink device never comes on at all. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Gfrodg,

Thank you for using the Dell Community Forum.
First, carefully read the install instructions and make sure you are following them correctly.
Second, make sure the software or drivers for the device are WindowsXP compatible.
Windows

With the system turned off, attach the device.
Then boot to Windows.
Click on Start, Control Panel, Add New Hardware, click Next.
The system will search for any new hardware that is attached.
If it finds your device, it will ask you to load the drivers for it.
When everything is done, reboot the system.
