Dell Inspiron 620 MT PSU Upgrade or Compatible GPU

Intel Core i5-2310 2.9GHz Quad-Core Processor
6MB Cache
8GB DDR3 1600MHz Memory
1TB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
Intel HD Graphics 2000
DVD±R/RW Optical Drive
Integrated 5.1 High Definition Audio
Dell 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN
10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet
8-in-1 Media Card Reader
Ports: 8 x USB 2.0 (2 front, 6 back), Headphone, Microphone, RJ-45 (Gigabit Ethernet), VGA, HDMI
Expansion slots: 1 PCI Express x16, 3 PCI Express x1
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit

I have these things hooked up to my computer at all times:
22' samsung LED widescreens x2 (dual monitor set up)
Wacom Intuos 4 Medium
Logitech m505 universal wireless mouse and keyboard
Wifi Kodak esp office 2170

In spite of all of this I was wondering if my computer could handle the HD 6670 Gddr5 card. Thanks. I'm not much of a heavy gamer but I would like to play games like Batman Arkam City or Lego Batman. I design a lot if it matters. Just worried if my system could take the HD 6700 without causing damage in the long run or short run.

According to this:
http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspiron-620?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=corp&~lt=popup
^It can take it, but I just want to make sure.

Is there any other lower recommendation cards that would be on the safer side? Or is the HD 6670 safe?

:)

Btw Bev, when I install the dedicated gpu and the drives that came with it, do I have to manually turn off the integrated HD graphics? Or does it turn off by itself when it senses a gpu?

When a PCIe graphics card is installed, the integrated graphics should be automatically disabled.

Bev, you can see the canted CPU and Dell logo in the "after" picture -- the original Dell mainboard fit.

So I bought a new case, and did some better cable management and added 6 fans.

That's both a good looking and a great upgrade.

You used my favourite type of chassis/case that's has fans to exhaust the residual heat through the top panel and with the PSU located on the base panel that helps to keep it cool.  :emotion-2:

Did you reuse the Dell/Foxconn motherboard, what was the front panel wiring like to connect to the motherboard?

rdunnill,

It would seem that my eyes are not good as yours, but after enlarging the motherboard picture, I did see an faint impression of a white Dell logo on the motherboard.  LOL  :emotion-4:

I hooked up a PC mic under the Reset switch side.

The case came with the ac97 and HD audio as well, but I didn't plug in the ac just the HD, because I don't use the front panel since my speakers have a mic and headphone input.

I was torn on waiting for the new ivy bridge processors, but then I thought about it and I probably wouldn't need it. For my needs I couldn't tell the difference between my core 2 duo and my i5. Besides getting an ivy bridge compatible mobo would enable me to upgrade if need be, otherwise I could just save some $$ and get an i7 2600k and overclock it. If needed a better gpu for more advanced games, I would just get a crossfire for my 6850.
