Yes, it will work. Why does DELL sell you the GX2 card that doesn't work with their system?
The XPS630 has x16 slots, but the actual bandwidth is only x8. So theoretically your card will work but its performance will be reduced in half. In reality, your card don't even utilize all of the x8 bandwidth (my speculation) so you may see no difference, or a slightly performance reduced, at best.
The 9800 gx2 is two 8800gts boards on one card, the way it works it buy reducing the 16x slots to two 8x slots. Thats what I beleve to be true. Now if I olny have it in an 8x slot then its basically just an 8800gts. Im not gonna buy a $1700 computer that doesent work to the level that it should. And to your retorical question why would dell sell a graphics card that wouldn't work. I honestly couldn't awnser that question. Why would they restrict a pcie slot to only 8x? Instead of putting a newer board in it. Like a 680i chipset.
After reading this post, I also ran CPU-Z on my 630i and It also say's that I have a 750i chipset. I was always wondering about that, since Nvidia system information says that my PCI-E is running at 16X. Hmm.
