Dimension 4600 wont connect to net after reinstall of OS
I have a friends 4600 at my place. He asked me to wipe the hardrive and reinstall the OS. I did so and a few issues popped up after the reinstall. I installed drivers so the system would recognize the SM controller bus and the NIC card. There are no other issues in the device manager, yet the system will not connect to the net.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

How do you connect to the internet, DSL or dialup?

Did you install the Intel (motherboard) Chipset drivers? HERE if not that could be the problem.
For future reference the correct install sequence for most recent Dell desktop's is (1) Install Windows (2) Install chipset drivers (3) Install device drivers (such as the sound drivers).

I loaded the chipset drivers but it still won't connect. The status bar on the web browser (before it tells me it can't connect) says "Detecting proxy settings".
As for my connection its cable/broadband. Im just rather confused, I've never come across this problem before.

My modem wouldn't assign an IP address to the comp., so a simple unplug/ rep;ug reset the modem and assigned the address (why windows couldn't do it itself is beyond me)
Thanks for your guys!
