Dimension 8400 Hard Drive replacement

The hard drive on my 8400 died.  Got the XP blue screen of death.  Safe mode wouldn't work etc.

Ran diagnostics and tons of HD errors.  Purchased a replacement hard drive through DELL.

Now what?  No CDs, everything on recovery partiton of old drive.

And Canada?

Can I also get replacement CDs for all of the other software that came with it?

Dell Canadian Customers can request a set of backup discs from HERE

You should receive the Dell reinstallation disc, of the operating system that was factory installed, all the drivers and applications can be downloaded from Dell's Drivers and Download site and can be burnt to a CD

Power off, unplug and replace the hard drive. Boot up with only mouse, monitor and keyboard attached. Press F2 to open BIOS setup. Change the  Drive Controller setting to RAID Autodetect/ATA. Save the setting and exit BIOS.

You'll need your Dell XP Reinstallation CD in order to install XP on the new drive. You can order a free replacement from Dell here, if you're in the US.

Boot from the XP CD, format the new drive and then install Windows. Only have mouse, monitor and keyboard attached while installing XP!

Then you need to install the drivers, in the following order: You'll need to know what video, audio cards, etc are installed in your system.

Dell Desktop System Software (System Utiltiies)

Chipset

Video driver

Audio driver

Network driver

Modem driver

etc.

Then get firewall and antiviral software running and go directly to the Microsoft update site and download SP3 and all other Microsoft updates/fixes.

Bev,

That's the same link as in my post, except it doesn't allow you to enter any Canadian provinces. Only US states can be picked from the dropdown list. So is there another page where our friends from up north can order replacement disks?

Ron.

When I preview the 'Link', I use the drop down box next to the US flag located on the top right of page and select Canada, then the page changes to the Canadian version, but the Dell site has been so flaky lately anything can happen.

When I switch to Canada, the page refreshes to the main support page, and no luck finding a Canadian version.

Actually, I just tried switching to Canada and then cutting and pasting the address from the Link and that worked.

Thanks for the help.

The stupdity continues.  I filled out the form including the appropriate Canadian fields i.e. Province and Postal Code.

About an hour later I received an e-mail informing me:

As per our records it appears that your Dell system was purchased in Canada. You have reached Dell's Technical Support for the United States. Dell Canada Support is not currently available via e-mail  hence I would request you to call 800-847-4096 to reach Dell Canada Support via telephone.

Sorry to hear that, Dell's website seems to be going from the sublime to the ridiculous.      :emotion-7:

Ron.

I don't think so, I believe it would be an exercise in futility.     :emotion-4:

Gord - sorry you're having so much trouble! Guess you have to call the 800-number- assuming that it works from Canada!  :emotion-4:

Bev - Do you want to bring these problems to our Liason friends? Think I've worn out my welcome pointing to stuff that doesn't work properly around here. :emotion-5:

Bev - I take your point. That said, I have a habit of tilting at windmills so I started a new thread over in the VIP forum. :emotion-14:

They may not do anything, but I feel better after poking a stick in their eye.  :emotion-2:

Ron.

I have those same 'Tilting at Windmills' feelings, when I go shopping and get charged a higher price at the checkout, than what was advertised.   LOL     :emotion-13:

Interesting development...

The link which previously went  directly to a page titled "Request Backup Disks" with Maple Leaf in upper lefthand corner and Canadian provinces listed in the drop-down list now goes to a page with a US flag and only US states listed.

Wonder if the powers that be wiped the "Canada" page out after reading my poke in the eye on the VIP forum...? :emotion-40:

As I said previously, in this discussion, 'Dell's site has been so flaky lately anything can happen'  LOL.    :emotion-43:
