Firewire 1394 port does not work. is cable unattached?

The front panel firewire port on my xps gen 1 does not work.  It does not appear in In Device Manager.  DM shows only  one firewire port, the port on my soundblaster audigy sound card. (This port works.  ) There is a cable labeled 9Y680 lying loose inside my computer case. I googled this number and found a source that said it was a Dell "Round Red Cable that Runs from System Board to Front I/O Panel for IEEE 1394 ".  The Red cable does seem to come from the front panel. I assume I need to attach this cable to my motherboard, but where?  The Dell specs  say I have a front panel 1394 connector, but I can't find any documentation for where to attach this cable to activate the port.  I found a picture of my motherboard here: (http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dimxps/en/sm/techov.htm#1106656) but I can't see anything marked as a firewire (1394) header.  What am I missing here?

Thanks.

Hey, thanks.  The specs on my audigy 2 ZS audio card say it has 2 x 5-pin firewire IEEE 1394 headers for connection to audigy 2 ZS audio card.  So would this be the place? I can't confirm the jack fittings until I finish the 17+  hour full system back-up that's underway, but I think you have helped me solve this......olivia

On your computer it does not appear that the Firewire ports are part of the motherboard.
They are most likely on a add in PCI card in one of the extra slots. If you look at those
cards, you will likely see one that has the header that will match up with the front panel cable.

That may work, but those are supposed to be for the audio according to what
audigy said. Where is the Rear Panel Firewire Jack ? ? ? The front panel firewire
should connect to a header on the same card or general location that the rear
firewire ports are connected to.

after a long consult with tech support I can report the following:
The specs sheet says there is a system board firewire connector, but it is wrong.  there is no such connector.  The red dangling cable connects to a sound card to activate the front panel port, but only if the sound card happens to support it. mine does not. This info is not what I would expect from dell, but at least it was honest and direct and the mystery is solved.

You may want to buy one of these if you need the Firewire ports
where you can easily get to them. By using it, your USB &
Firewire will be right on your desktop, easy to get to.

Or this one, which is less expensive
