Graphics card fan very noisy - GeForce GT625 & Inspiron 3847

Hi,

appreciate any assistance to resolve this longstanding issue.

12 months ago purchased an Inspiron 3847, NVidia GeForce  GT625, Windows 8.1. Occasionally on bootup and 'wake up' the fan on graphics card would get quite noisy. Gently stopping/slowing fan would stop the noise. After  2-3 months, noise began to occur every bootup/wake up and last for about 1 minute. This has continued for last 9 months.

The graphics card has been replaced twice and is silent for a day or two after engineer visit, then it returns exactly as before at every bootup/wakeup. Noise can be stopped by gently touching video card fan. (Engineer has heard the noise and agrees it definitely shouldn't be doing that).

Diagnostic tests are fine and I do not experience any video issues (blackouts, freezing, slowness).

Has anybody seen this type of behaviour before? could it be linked to another component? Any suggestions for further investigations?

Thanks for any help,

Rog

Unless you know how to remove the fan and oil the bearings with synthetic oil like mobile 1 it will get worse then die.  It may already be too late.

Pretty typical for that low end video card. Consider changing to this one.

Thanks for the replies, appreciate it.

Chris-M - do you think it is typical for this issue to occur on 3 separate graphics cards? I can't find any reference to this issue happening elsewhere so seems very unfortunate to occur on 3 cards, Do you think it could it be a fault or setting elsewhere that causes the fan to do this?

I'm also struggling to understand why this only occurs at startup/wakeup, yet never occurs when the pc is in use and the graphics card is heavily utilised; streaming content or running video diagnostics

SpeedStep - are you suggesting that the bearings needed oiling on each of the 3 new cards immediately after install?

Appreciate any other further suggestions to get to the root cause.

Thanks,
Rog

I oil the bearings before they break down.

Doing this after the card has started to wear is less effective. When the card is really hot the speed of the fan goes up in such a way that you cant hear the groaning that low speeds make.

Eventually the bearings sieze and the fan stops working altogether.

Then the card will start to show pink snow artifiacts.  The fan bearing is likely to be made from sintered bronze, which is porous metal that is pre set with lubricant at the factory. When that lubricant runs out, the bearing will start to wear, and make a distinctive buzz. The wear will get worse and worse, the buzz louder and louder, and the fan slower and slower, until finally it stops.  I recommend mobile 1 because even when heated the oil does not turn dark and break down.
