Inspiron 20 Model 3043
One of our machines is a Dell Inspiron 20 3043 model.
Recently it has started failing to boot Windows and failing to a black screen that displays "Checking Media" – after some investigating it would appear that the hard drive has failed. Gone into the bios and ran the diagnostics which has returned error 2000-0151 on the hard drives tab.
I have reseated the hard drive to no avail.
Details displayed on the bios screen are-
INSYDEH20 Setup Utility
BIOS Version: A07
Product Name: Inspiron 20 Model 3043
This particular model does not have a CD or DVD drive.
What is the best way to get this repaired?
If I put a new hard drive in it's going to have nothing on there so it won't boot anything, if I installed something like linux onto an external hard drive then plug it in via usb how do I get it to boot from that?

Make sure secure boot is turned OFF in system setup. If you have UEFI enabled, make sure your linux distribution AND boot media support UEFI - if they don't, you'll also need to enable legacy boot. Once that's set, press F12 a few times and choose your flash drive as your boot device when the boot menu appears.

The hard drive does need to be replaced. You'll need a set of recovery media on a flash drive - if you did not prepare one when you initially started up the computer, you'll need to contact Dell to purchase one now.

Thanks for the reply.
I have located another hard drive and had it installed, however same result, black screen showing "checking media" and fails over to "press any key to reboot". Is there a step I am missing after installing a new hard drive to have it recognised?

You need to install the operating system onto the drive - it's blank when it comes from the manufacturer. You'll either need the recovery flash drive you prepared when you received the system, or you'll need to make a drive from the Windows 10 media you can get from Microsoft -- or if you want the Dell factory recovery image, you'll need to contact Dell to have that sent.

The replacement HDD came with windows already on it.
On the bios "Main" tab next to the "Fixed HDD" line it infact displays the name of the HDD I have in the machine, whether it is the original or replacement.
I just can't get it to show up in the "Boot" tab so I can change it to Windows Boot Manager.

Unless Windows was installed on that drive in exactly the same model system you have, you're going to need to reload Windows. If it was installed in another of exactly the same model, be sure secure boot is OFF before you try booting the drive. If that doesn't get it going, you'll need to treat the drive as if it were blank and load the OS with the drive mounted in the system where it will be in service.

You'll need to prepare a bootable flash drive - same as you'd need to install Windows. Most Linux distributions support making a bootable drive from an ISO file.

Ok thanks very much for your help.
If I were to install something like Linux instead of Windows, how would I get it to boot/install from USB given that this model does not have a CD/DVD drive?

I have created a bootable flash drive with linux on it - how do I go about making it boot from that at startup? With the flash drive inserted it is still going to "checking media.. failed" screen. I am using bios version A07
