Microsoft. NET errors, Document Viewer Errors, a downloaded picture won't erase and pop ups wont pop up when needed!

Just tonight I was given a new laptop by roommate (yeah she rocks) well I am trying to clean up my desktop (which is a Dimension 2400) to give to my mom and 4 younger siblings because they all still live at home with no computer and I am away at college.

My desktop keeps giving me several errors.

Microsoft. NET error pops up only at inconvenient times and I have Microsoft. NET 1.1, 2.0 and 3.0 all and don't know what to do about this error.

Second Document Viewer keeps acting like it is trying to open and never does I end up having to hit cancel on it 3 or 4 times before it closes or freezes my computer and I have to restart it. I had an HP printer with my dell computer and am wondering if that is it?

2 years ago I downloaded a 4 leaf picture off of the internet and tried to make it my desktop picture well now you can only see the picture at start up and shut down and I can't get rid of it.

Finally my last problem is that I was reviewing the Dell Network for almost 7 hours on my day off trying to fix all of these problems and it kept taking me to site to download something to get rid of malware/spyware and also to download the newest version of Microsoft. NET which would get rid of all of the others and my computer would pull up the new window with the website and then all of a sudden shut down that web page. I can't figure out for the life of me what to do and I really want to get this computer to my family as my sister is getting ready to start applying for colleges and such and I want her to have a computer at home to help with this. Can anyone please help me?

Thank you so so much

To be honest, if my D2400 was as messed up as this one, I would wipe the disk and start over.  Assuming there are things you want to keep, however, the best advice I can offer is to go to the Malware Forum.  There are some very good people there who should be able to help.

Read the first post on the first page to learn how to post on the forum.  Good luck to you.

I have no problem wiping out my whole system and doing a system reboot but I am not sure I have all of my disks. Do you know how many I should have? Thank you for your suggestion though!

My D2400 was shipped with the following:

Windows XP with Service Pack 1a installation CD

Dell Resource CD with utilities and drivers

Modem Driver and Diagnostic CD

Dell Applications CD; this is the one that has things like a CD burning program and such

Assorted application CDs for the software I ordered with the computer.

In order to perform a successful install you need at least the first two CDs, along with a way to update to Service Pack 2.  I have the Service Pack 2 update burned to a CD for this purpose, but if you prefer, you can probably do the same thing with Service Pack 3 and not have so many updates to perform.

The installation process is tedious, but the work you will need to do in order to clean the machine will also be time consuming.  If you have things on the computer you want to keep, especially if you don't have them backed up, cleaning the machine is about your only option, however.
