No D or E drive recognised in Bios or on My Computer

 Hi,
I have just seen that somebody else seems to have experienced a similar problem. when i started my computer a message came on saying that primary 1 drive, secondary 0 and secondary 1 drives were not found, after hitting F1, the PC would continue to restart as normal. However, the D and E drive (DVD and DVDRW drives are not there and cannot be accessed or made to work in any way.
When hitting F2 to enter Set up before fully booting it seems the Bios does not recognise any drive (except C).
I have tried clearing the NVRAM in F2 as somebody else kindly suggested but all that has done is got rid of the error message when starting up, it now boots as normal but the drives are still not there.

Does anybody know what to do? I don't really want to intall a new BIOS as I am a somewhat computer iliterate person and get desperate when things go wrong... can anybody please help me?!

 THANKS in advance, Chris

It would help if you told us which machine you have....Also please confirm yo've not made any hardware changes recently...

It seems either the bios has got confused; or one or other of your CD drives is faulty.  Generically, what you now need to do is to go into the bios and set the two secondary IDE devices to AUTO from NONE, and reboot.  If that doesn't work, try each drive in turn set to AUTO with the other set to NONE.  See if you can get either to work that way.  If they still both refuse to be recognised, then one may have failed causing the machine to not recognise either driv; then you will have to open the case and try each CD connected physically in turn.  Post here when you've tried the bios settings for more info .....

Hi Peter, thanks for a such a speedy reply which I certainly did not expect.

I tried several options i.e. one off while the other on auto and vice versa but to no avail.

my machine by the way, is a dell dimension 4550 series and the bios is Revision A02.

i did install a new dvd r/w drive about six months ago and everything has worked fabulously until a few weeks ago when it started not to recognise it. a couple of times i tried to switch between auto/off and on a few occasions the dvd r/w drive actually got to work but as soon as i restarted the pc it was back to not being recognised and now it does not seem to work no matter how many times i jiggle.

i heard that there is a virus that prevents the drives from being recognised, do you think there is anything to that?

i am rather frightened of having to physically open the cpu to check whether they are hooked in properly as i have never done this before... i am one of those users who only use computers and nothing else, shame on me!

anyway, thanks for your help!

Unfortunately you have reached a point in which to further trouble-shoot the problem you will have to open up the system and play around with the drives themselves.  Since the problem appears to have started with the new drive, I would disconnect it from the ribbon cable then clear the NVRAM and see what happens.  If the problem disappears then double check how the new drive was installed.  Make sure the jumper is set for Cable Select and that it is securely attached to the ribbon cable.  Try the drive again.  If the problem returns then I would suspect the new drive is failing.
