Problem with S-Video

I have a Dimension 8300 with an NVIDIA GeForce FX5200 video card. I thought that to get an S-Video output, I only needed to plug an S-video cable into the card and then into my TV. However, I get nothing. I tried using the same cable and plugging my cable box into the same TV input and I got a picture, so it seems like the problem is the computer. I also did the same with my Inspiron 5100 laptop and again got no output. Is there some setting I have to toggle to get S-video output out of the computer?

The laptops and the desktops tend to handle this slightly differently (many of the laptops have a key to switch between displays).  Unless you have updated the drivers on the desktop, this would not work (I assume Windows XP).  Install the latest drivers, turn off the machine, connect it to the TV, then boot up.  Right click on you desktop (or however you like to go to display properties).  Click on Settings, Advanced, now look for the name of your card.  Find for the multiple display option that the nVidia driver will give you.  Sometimes the control might be a little tricky (the automatic selection between S-video or composite does not always work right so you might have to play with it).  However, you should be able to see the option of enabling dual displays (or dual view) and see the output on the TV.  Just be sure to clone the display (usually the better way of doing it) so that you can have both the PC monitor and the TV as output screens.  Then you can play with the resolution to get the best picture on your TV.  Hope this helps,

Stan
