If the system shipped with Windows 7, there will be a label in the battery compartment with the product key.  Note that you MUST use OEM media (Dell Windows 7 install disc) with this license key.

Do you even need the Win 7 key if you updated to Win 10?

A lot of these coming into the shop now  E6420 from 2007 with VISTA COA and pirated windows7.  You are only licensed with the version that came with your system.

Service Tag does not give you access to a key.  The vista OEM SLP key won't serve as a 10 key. Dell does not store or maintain a database of Microsoft COA keys.

A GENUINE 7 HOME OR PRO KEY will work as a new key for WINDOWS 10 when installing by saying you have no key.  You then change the key while online to the home or pro version.

NOBODY AT DELL OR HERE CAN PROVIDE A NEW WINDOWS 7 COA.

First thing check under the battery for a Windows 7 COA. If the COA is faded you can activate Windows 7 OEM using the SLIC version 2.1 present in the systems ACPI tables (motherboards BIOS/UEFI).

He cant get the windows 7 key because he never had a windows 7 key to begin with.  These 2007 2008 models shipped with Vista not Windows 7.

There are a lot of walk in customers demanding Free Windows 10 for their Vista Units.

This is not happening.  And Since Vista like XP is End of Life End of support we will not Reinstall Vista or XP.  Nor is any Microsoft Refurbisher allowed to provide XP or Vista or 7 media.

7 is end of sales and support and goes end of life in 2020.

Windows 7 is also NOT SUPPORTED on newer machines.

ONLY 10.  8.0 and 8.1 are also End of Sales.

There is no RETRIEVAL of Microsoft Software Product keys for any version of Windows on ANY Dell model.  Never has been. Never will be.

The Free Upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 still works despite Microsoft's marketing push to entice users to Upgrade. I carried out a Windows 7 to Windows 10 Upgrade on hardware that had never had Windows 10 previously installed last week and it activated without any issues.

The Latitude E6420 should have a Windows 7 COA.

The Latitude E6420 was a 2011 model (earliest BIOS A01 release date 14th March 2011) not a 2007 model.

One of the standard processors was the i5-2540M and was released in 2011Q1:

A person asking to "retrieve a windows 7 key" is not going to be successful.  Your assertion that it MUST come with windows 7 COA is not based in Fact.   DELL does not maintain a list of what KEY in SLP or COA etc came with any particular system.  The person is asking for a key here because they lost it or more likely NEVER HAD a 7 Key.  The Key is in the battery compartment so it isn't going to get rubbed off.   Release Date has Nothing whatsoever to do with what COA came with a Corporate/GOV Latitude.   The issue wasn't the Release Date it was the Corporate Types Demanding To stay with XP/Vista.   Yesterday There was a user demanding Windows 7 license where the service tag configuration clearly states VISTA.  The user went on to accuse the techs of switching the WIN7 COA out 8 years ago with a Vista COA.  When the user was informed that the COA and Licence came from Dell and that being a microsoft Authorized Refurbisher means that XP and VISTA and 7 and 8 media are not available just made the person even more belligerent.   We had to tell him he had to leave or security would forcibly remove him from the building.

Many corporate types had thousands of them with 32 bit VISTA BusinessCOA Due to XP not being an option because we demanded a cheaper price. These were not consumer machines they were corporate and Military versions. Many which Shipped with XP or VISTA COA instead of 7 COA. The DOD even pays Millions of Dollars a month to keep support for XP on shipboard systems and even land based networks. The SAC still uses 8 inch Floppy Drives and DOS for the Minute Man Missile System even today.

Here is how to view your product key in windows

1 – copy and paste the code given below in your notepad.

Set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")

MsgBox ConvertToKey(WshShell.RegRead("HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\DigitalProductId"))

Function ConvertToKey(Key)

Const KeyOffset = 52

i = 28

Chars = "BCDFGHJKMPQRTVWXY2346789"

Do

Cur = 0

x = 14

Do

Cur = Cur * 256

Cur = Key(x + KeyOffset) + Cur

Key(x + KeyOffset) = (Cur \ 24) And 255

Cur = Cur Mod 24

x = x -1

Loop While x >= 0

i = i -1

KeyOutput = Mid(Chars, Cur + 1, 1) & KeyOutput

If (((29 - i) Mod 6) = 0) And (i <> -1) Then

i = i -1

KeyOutput = "-" & KeyOutput

End If

Loop While i >= 0

ConvertToKey = KeyOutput

End Function

2 – Now, save as all files with name key.vbs on your desktop or anywhere you want.

3 – Now, double click on it and you will get your product key displayed in a dialogue box.
