USB to a T

In upgrading a T series PC from 450 MHz to 750, when Windows 98 is booting in, after the Windows 98 splash screen has been up for a while, the screen goes blank (with just a cursor in the upper left corner) for about 20 - 30 secs. There is USB HP scanner software installed. It doesn't seem to matter whether legacy USB support is enabled or not (though maybe with it enabled, it'll freeze once per 100 boots, per Microsoft website). Ironically, it takes longer for the 750 to boot to Windows than the 450!

disconnect all usb devices at the back except for a usb mouse. and test for boot. if it boots fine then uninstall and reinstall the s/w's and updtaed drivers of those usb devices. if still no go, contact thier respective manufacturers. if still no go, update the win98 usb drivers.

http://www.usbman.com/win98seusbguide.htm is a pretty interesting site--and pretty scary too! I took a different route from what you suggested, reverseswing, because I'm already using the latest driver for the HP 5470c scanner, and because in reading the usbman site, some Microsoft pages and others, there seems to be a kind of concensus that power management and USB don't get along well. So I scraped down the HD and started from scratch...yet again. This time I turned off power management in the BIOS. Then installed everything. Guess what? It still has a very long delay coming into Windows and freezes in msgsrv32.exe if the scanner isn't plugged in. NB: the freezing only happens after IomegaWare is installed.

The easy out is to install the scanner on the parallel port. It works perfectly that way. I was only tempted to try the USB by HP software "highly recommending" using it. I guess there's a slower bit rate on the parallel cable. Another solution, perhaps, as I've read somewhere, is to get a USB card.

Forgot to mention, the msgsrv32.exe freeze happens with a 750 or 800 MHz cpu installed. (Maybe other speeds too.) The 450 comes up fine, with or without the USB cable to the scanner plugged in. Must be a timing problem.
