Vostro 200 CPU Upgrade

Does anybody have a CPU compatibility list for the Vostro 200?  I've fallen back on the computer knowledge curve and find so many processors available. Right now it has an  E2140 and I'm looking at something like the E6300 - a bit faster and not too expensive.  I see one at Newegg for $78 with free shipping.  TIA

Hi Bev it also definitely runs an E5700 3.00 Ghz Dual processor which is usually about 25.00 GBP on ebay (because I run one in mine, but I was wondering if it might also run an intel PENTIUM D 945 SL9QB SL9QQ 3.4 GHz 4M LGA775 Dual Core. If it does, you should be able to get one of these quite cheaply.

The Pentium D would be a lousy choice, even if it were compatible. The Wolfdale models have better throughput and less power consumption (and in turn, lower heat generation).

I have several Vostro 200 machines.  i have upgraded several of them.  The key is finding a faster chip that has the same bus speed and in this case it is 800 Mhz.  I have replaced my original CPU's with E5700 which is a dual core 3.0 Ghz processor.  Now you need to make sure you upgrade the bios to the latest first but once that is done, the E5700 will work fine.  You can find them on Ebay for anywhere from 20 bucks to 65 bucks....used....rare to find a new one these days since that processor is no longer produced. But my machines really run great now.  Also, max out your Ram memory when you upgrade, it makes a difference.

Little more help...I am having trouble finding one of those CPUs online. Do you know where I can get the best one on your list.

Check out the Wolfdale Dual Core E8400, 3.00G, 6MB, 1333FSB here:

http://www.amazon.com/Intel-Wolfdale-E8400-3-00GHz-1333MHz/dp/B005JT7YPG

The price is reasonable and is about the same as I paid several years ago, also on Amazon.

Thanks again Bev

One item and I will leave you alone. Do I need the Bios upgrade for the graphics card or just the CPU upgrade?

You only need a BIOS upgrade for the processor and not for the graphics card.

Yes, the E8600 will work fine with the default 300w power supply.

But, I question the wisdom of spending $200+ on an obsolete EOL DDR2, 530 MT that can be  purchased for around $200.

Better to put the $200 towards buying a new, or used system that supports DDR3 RAM and at least a Quad processor.

The Vostro 200 will support an aftermarket board, but an opening would have to be cut out for the IO shield. Furthermore, if the case is anything like the Vostro 220s, there will be fixed CPU mounting bosses that must be ground off to support newer CPUs like the Core i5.

Will the E5700 work with either of the mother boards Bev mentioned above?
