Vostro 200 CPU Upgrade

Does anybody have a CPU compatibility list for the Vostro 200?  I've fallen back on the computer knowledge curve and find so many processors available. Right now it has an  E2140 and I'm looking at something like the E6300 - a bit faster and not too expensive.  I see one at Newegg for $78 with free shipping.  TIA

Yes, it should, but prior to installing the processor, check that you have BIOS Version 1.0.15, or higher installed, when support for new Intel CPU's was added.

Before installing the e8600 processor, did you upgrade the BIOS to the latest version 1.0.16, when support for new Intel CPU's was added?

Check the reading of the power button LED, is it Steady Blue, Blinking Blue, Steady Amber, Blinking Amber or is it Off?

Have you checked that the modules and processor [pin-1 correctly aligned, see page 161] are installed correctly

Checked that all the power and data cables to the motherboard and drives are properly connected, by removing and reconnecting them.

The Vostro 200 Mini Tower Troubleshooter is Here:

http://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_vostro_desktop/vostro-200_Owner%27s%20Manual2_en-us.pdf

Are you running a 64-bit, or a 32-bit operating system?

Crucial's certified compatible DDR2 memory for the Vostro 200 Mini Tower, is here:

http://uk.crucial.com/gbr/en/compatible-upgrade-for/Dell/vostro-200-mini-tower

Have you tried reinstalling the original memory modules and processor, to see if this will make a difference.

when I installed the new CPU and RAM the motherboard LED was solid amber.

I made sure they RAM was placed correctly.

The system at the min is a 32 I was intending to install the new 64 with the new components.

This is the memory I bought

4 GB 2x2GB DDR2 PC2-6400 PC2-5300 U DDR2-667/ 800 MHZ MEMORY DIMM PC RAM 240 PIN

I will try and re install again,

The following is Dell Troubleshooting steps [page 82] for a solid/steady Amber power button LED:

Ensure that all power cables are securely connected to the system board (see "System Board Components" on page 106).

Ensure that the main power cable and front panel cable are securely connected to the system board (see "System Board Components" on page 106).

Now reinstall the e8600 processor and using the old RAM, see if the system starts without any errors.

Regards to the 'New' RAM you purchased, it is used memory, I have no idea if it is compatible, or could have failed, or been bad prior to purchase.

Personally I'm always wary of buying any used memory modules.

I installed the new cpu with the old ram and everything is running fine, it appears the ram I bought isn't suited or dodgy. I've sent it back and ordering from curcal

Glad to hear that you found the solution, buying used memory off eBay is not a wise choice.

Can you summarize what you purchased and what you upgraded in the Vostro 200. Maybe I will do the same but I have already upgraded the memory with new parts.

Thanks
