Vostro 200

Hi,

Is there anyone who can help me with an issue I have just encountered with the vostro 200 startup.

When I press the start button the huge whoosh of the fan starts but then it continues and does not stop.

There is nothing on the monitors screen and the only way I can turn off is to hold the start button so it is not booting up.

Yesterday I noticed few freezes but they seemed to sort themselves out.

Really grateful for any help as, as usual I have not done a backup for Long time.

Fingers crossed,

Kevin

Try removing the coin-shaped battery from the motherboard for a minute or so. Let us know how that works out.

No beeps when start is pressed. Nothing on monitor.

You might try disconnecting the hard drive and any other devices not needed for the PC to boot, and then restarting. If the problem persists, it's pointing to the motherboard or power supply.

Thanks for your support. I am going to buy a new battery and replace it to see if that doe anything.

The computer is about 7 years old but has hardly been used with long spells of being off completely. The window package is vista Basic Home Edition.

I will post the result of replacement battery and disconnection of the hard drive.

Again, thanks for your time.

New barrery fitted. Nothing. Hard drive disconnected. Nothing. Fans disonected. Nothing. Main fan on motherboard reconnected, battery in, hard drive reconnected. Computer booted up. So the rear fan is not connected and everything is now working. How long for I do not know.

I can make back up discs now and place my work on external hard drive.

I will then shut down and reconnect rear fan.

Regards

The chassis fan isn't an expensive item to replace, if you're feeling moderately adventurous. Glad to hear you got it to boot.

Thanks again for your response.

I thought I would give it another day to see if it started up again. It did but I get discette not connected error message on a black screen then an option to boot normally or in safe mode. Other than that it is running fine other than the usual error messages of IE has no current certificate.

This has now all been resolved as the clock went back to 2007. Once rest everything is fine.

I have not tried plugging back the chassis fan yet. Before disconnection it appeared to be in working order I will do this in the morning and see what happens

Thank you for your support..
