Vostro 220 BIOS freezes with Logitech Illuminated Keyboard

I have a Vostro 220 (mini tower) that freezes for 1-2 minutes when the BIOS is at the "Initializing USB Controllers" stage if a Logitech Illuminated USB keyboard is plugged in. I can't use the keyboard to enter the BIOS (F2 or F12), but the keyboard works fine once in Vista. Tried different ports, same problem.

The Logitech keyboard works fine on other computers that I have. The stock Dell keyboard works fine on the Vostro 220.

Logitech seems to be pointing to a BIOS problem. I'm using the latest BIOS, v1.1.4.

Link to the keyboard: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/products/I_O_Devices/productdetail.aspx?c=us&l=en&cs=19&sku=A2136825

Any suggestions?

Yes, it is very troubling. I have not dealt with Dell in a few years and in the past, they seemed to be attentive to an issue such as this. The business model seems to have changed to the point where I would consider doing business elsewhere in the future. As you write, the keyboard, even after the issue is quite well known and Chris has provided Service Tag numbers, (including mine) they are still selling the keyboard as an upgrade. No one seems to have a care in the world about the issue. In fairness I should not complain as I bought the board from Newegg, but did not know the issue existed until I connected it. However, it's been quite some time since the problem has surfaced and its amazing to me that Dell is selling an upgrade product that causes problems. They are either arrogant, nonchalant, or rather ignorant.

So, it's been a few months. No fix from Dell and certainly no fix from Logitech. Very disappointing. Plus, the Logitech Illuminated Keyboard is still available through the Dell store. That's very troubling.

Communication is the key!!! If customers receive some form of a missive with a bit of information, then we generally feel respected. However, in this case, Dell has not only dropped the ball it seems, but they've disrespected anyone who has purchased this keyboard from THEM when they bout the XPS 9000/435MT. I honestly think Chris has done what he can as he frequents this forum frequently. However, the octopus and dysfunctional size of Dell creates obstacles even for those who have well conceived intentions. What truly boggles my mind is they are still offering this peripheral and it's a broken part when using the computer.

I would like to know if any of the other brands of illuminated keyboards out there have the same problem. Although I still have my Logitech stored in the box waiting for a fix, I would buy a different brand if I knew for sure there would be no slow boot problem.

They offered to replace everything with the same components, I told them no - since I found this thread seeing replacment with same i7 based pc is a futile attempt at resolution...

My ctrl-f search is broke in IE8. Has anyone tried using the keyboard on a powered USB hub?

Add yet another one to the list.  I recently purchased an Inspiron 537S running Vista and didn't like the keyboard I got.  Bought the nice looking Logitech illuminated Keyboard and it seemed to work fine until I restarted my comp.  Instead of calling tech support I found this thread, and it appears this problem is going no where fast.  My old Inspiron with XP3 boots perfectly with this keyboard, and I also hooked it up to my buddies Mac Mini and that recognized it swimmingly.  No problems except on my nice new computer.  Appears I should either list this on eBay or buy a different one until this problem gets fixed.

I have just tried to use a powered  BELKIN 4 ports USB Hub with my Logitech llluminated keyboard connected on it.

No change: no access to BIOS...:emotion-16:

So now ? Is it so difficult resolving such a problem between two peripherals, both sold by DELL ?

I think I know the answer... :-(

...and the worst part is that we've been ignored for months. Nothing.  Why should we continue to do business with a company that doesn't take care of it's clients? At the very least, we deserve an update on the situation.

I recieved a new XPS 435 w/ a LIK as sold by Dell as an  "UPGRADE" a month ago.  After many many hours of "assistance" from Dells crack XPS premium tech support, my new system is now rendered useless.  I am currently waiting for a replacement. If I have any problems with the replacement, I will not be wasting any more time with Dell. I will be returning the system for a refund and doing business elseware. I had a conversation with a Dell XPS premium tech support manager, and he said that he was unaware of any compatibillity issues. I refered him to this thread, and he seemed suprised and obviously uninformed. I am not hopefull . On another note I have had several conversations with Dells Customer 'I DON'T' Care department...............

Well, perhaps it only seems obvious to me. But when you see a large company with a "Community Forum" I already suspect their customer support sucks. I think they really want us to pose our problems to other users on the forum hoping we'll find a solution there or simply use it to vent our frustrations. And for the most part I think people do...since getting on the forum is the path of least resistance...getting through to speak to a tech is a pain in the rear. I had the same problem with the LIK. Also had the problem where nothing but a high end (read "expensive") true sine-wave UPS works with my XPS 435. Love my system but hate the support.

In this particular situation pertaining to the Logi Illuminated keyboard, there is NO SUPPORT. You are left on your own and the only fix is either be patient while the boot time increases significantly or use another keyboard. It even appears Chris has left the building on this issue. Before I post in this thread, I always check again and see if Dell has this keyboard as an optional upgrade even though it's a dead fish. They still have the keyboard as an option. The wonders of a large conglomerate like Dell never ceases to amaze me. However, the XPS9000 excluding this issue, has been a fine purchase in my personal situation.

I have discovered that if you unplug the keyboard b4 you power on your computer and wait to plug it back in after Windows Desktop has appeared the computer boots like normal.  Doesn't help if you want access to the BIOS itself, but will shorten boot times to normal.  Food for thought.

Yeah, I did that for a few days before deciding that Dell and/or Logitech shouldn't make me go through that. Nor do I want to add that brute force method to my daily routine or put that much wear and tear on the front USB ports. I went through a three week troubleshooting drill with Logitech including replacing the keyboard until they washed their hands of it and said it's a Dell problem. And I see people have gotten no further with Dell.  I switched back to a normal keyboard and got over it. I do miss the illuminated keyboard though.
